Is their anything like Akira now? I saw that movie when I was 13, and it blew my mind. I haven't seen anything close to that........... I want more of that.

@racob7: Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo was the last anime I saw that I liked........ Blame it on Steve Blum.

No idea about Akira but I started anime with Sword Art Online. And Attack on Titan is comparable to it.

Ghost in the Shell has the cyberpunk themes and psychological tones like Akira.

I'd also recommend Serial Experiments Lain.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a nice piece of anime history that's still talked about today. It's basically a tearing apart of the gundam and mech genres with a ton of psychological stuff thrown in. People still analyze it to this day. And for recent stuff, I'd go with @russellmania77's suggestion of Attack on Titan, or Madoka Magica, which is a deconstruction on the whole Sailor Moon magical girls genre and it's pretty deep.

Berserk manga? Hell yeah. Anime? Not so much...imo :p

Oh! Full Metal Panic = one of the best all round animes ever and underrated as hell imo.

@judasnixon: Watch Welcome to the NHK. It's nothing like Akira but that's what I really liked about it. It's about a paranoid, young shut in living in Tokyo. I'm no authority on anime, but I thought it was great.

#22 Edited by frogdog (3518 posts) - - Show Bio

@fallschirmjager: The anime got me into the manga, sure its flawed considering how much info cut from original source but in comparion to akira, it has most the important parts of the golden age(minus wylen)

Anime movies however yeah I wouldn't even bother

You all fail so horribly at this.

@judasnixon: will this suffice for History's strongest disciple: Kenichi? Tell me when you start ;)

@judasnixon: What are some anime you've watched already? Also, would you be interested in manga?

Ghost in the Shell has the cyberpunk themes and psychological tones like Akira.

I'd also recommend Serial Experiments Lain.

I could never get into Ghost in the Shell, always seemed a bit dull to me.

Same. I've seen other cyberpunk/sci-fi anime like: Serial experiments lain, Ergo Proxy, Psycho-pass etc. And I just couldn't get into it. One of the few anime I ever dropped.

@judasnixon: I would recommend the usual. Baccano(For class), Serial experiments Lain(For mindf*ck) and Monster(For being a psychological masterpiece)

Hope it helped! Watch Baccano and Monster dubbed. Watch Lain subbed. Lain is pretty old, so it might give you more of an Akira feel.

Ghost in the Shell is pretty dope.

Also, I would place anything from Hayao Miyazaki on the list as well. With his older movies being better (Nausicaa the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle being my favorites).

#41 Posted by Fallschirmjager (18925 posts) - - Show Bio

I do as well dislike GITS and GITS SAC.

Care to explain what you like about it?

first of all, speaking of the movie. Its simply the best animation I've ever seen. Don't believe me? Watch this: Several times.

Seriously though pay attention. Random people are alive in this sequence. People we never meet are checking their watches, going to work and doing shit.

Every reflective surface has stuff in it ...and people are moving on them. The rain...the level of detail is simply utterly amazing. Its not even close.

2nd of all. The dialogue and themes are incredibly complex and intelligent. You will learn something every time you watch the movie.

As far as the series overall its simply fantastic themes of cyberpunk that again explore complex themes. Each of the villains are pretty awesome and unique (among other things) and its simply a wonderful case of story telling.

Not gonna lie, kinda done with anime/manga. i used to love it, but now, even the critically acclaimed stuff doesn't really hold my attention. Maybe I grew out of it.

Darker Than Black, Trigun, FMA Brotherhood, Outlaw Star, Psycho Pass, and Fate Zero.
