So it appears that Gamestop will be closing down about 500 stores across the U.S. due to poor sales in 2012.. I don't necessarily care for Gamestop but I feel sorry for those who are losing their jobs

*Side note and if anyone cares BestBuy is also closing abut 200 stores across the U.S.

Makes sense. Hard disc copies are becoming a thing of the past. BestBuy can still survive because its main market is selling hardware. But soon, there won't be a need for a GameStop.

I don't shop there as much as I used to but

NOOOOO

I mean they already closed down 3 in my city/town. We only have one now :(

Soon I will have to pay 60 bucks{thats overpriced in my book} for games that I use to buy for 20 bucks.

Or I might stop being a Gamer. It won't be a big change since I hardly play now, but still... now it might be official :/

It's really not. If you absolutely need to use a brick-and-mortar store, go to best buy. Otherwise, Amazon works brilliantly.

The one nearest me is hiring, but I understand that physical stores are suffering big time from online stores, and digital downloads.

And do you accept these stores' resignation?

And do you accept, the resignation of all of these liars?! Of all the corrupt?!

We take gaming from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of a generation who have kept you down, with myths of trade-in credit... And we give it back to you... The people.

Gaming is yours. None shall interfere, do as you please.

But start by storming Gamestop, and freeing the quality titles!

Step forward, those who would serve. For an army will be raised. The employees will be ripped from their decadent workplaces, and cast out into the cold industry that we know, and endure!

Servers, will be convened.

Achievements, will be enjoyed!

Respawns will be shed.

This is, really, partially Gamestop's fault. I used to manage for them and during the end of my tenure, they opened two stores (one literally across the street from a former funcoland that was bought out company-wide and brougth into the gamestop fold), which was less than a mile from my store.

So, we literally had two stores--one right across the street from the other--and then one more less than a mile down the road in the mall.

And they were surprised when all three stores' revenues went down. Dur. It's called over-saturation.

And, with the rise of digital DL straight from Playstation's network or XBL... yeah. Need is decreasing as well. Still, they rushed to expand. Short term, it probably brought in money. Now... they're losing what they gained. Bad business plan.

Plus with the talks that both PS4 and new Xbox won't allow the use of used games sort of takes their main money maker away from them. Without used game sales they are just a one trick ponie that other companies like Best Buy, Target and even Wal-Mart will be able to do better (as far as promotions and pricing). Gamestop is in a bad place. the Blockbuster video of the gaming world.

You are either dumb or desperate to sell your games to Gamestop, or both. If money is your concern, you should only sell your games on Ebay or Amazon, but buying your used games from those sites is just as bad as selling games to Gamestop. It's sad to see those stores go, there really is no better place to buy used games.

I believe this will be a fallacy. It will destroy companies like Gamefly and other retailers in some respect. For MULTIPLAYER they have already started making you pay extra if you have a used game-- EA loves to package codes to enter, and if you don't have one, you buy one for ten bucks for online play.

The pressure is actually against the systems' companies to not do that. It would be a bad move, in my opinion. A very bad one.

Eh... it's not 'just' the Economy, friend. The business model of brick and mortar stores has taken a HUGE hit with the rapid increase in online shopping. The game industry didn't take a massive hit... the stores did. Because the business model of a physical store vs. that of an online retail outlet is far more expensive. Therefore, they are not as profitable. Therefore, they start getting closed down when they see a downturn.

I don't know what's more laughable: you're grasp on the economy or your assumption on how much I go out.

The economy isn't nearly as bad as people think. What we are seeing is migration of consumers to online business models. I make a living doing custom action figures, which are stupid expensive compared to regular action figures, I could not do this in a poor economy. Here's an example of what customs go for, and these are just 2 of the highest in the last few weeks;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=221181020551

As you can see there is plenty of money out there, people just don't go to brick and motar stores to spend it.

Oh, and Wake Up?

Before it was Game Stop, it was called Babbages. Software, etc. went out. EB Games was purchased by Game Stop, and stores converted, in the majority, to game stops. So, your point on that is a strawman.

Game Stop also bought out other competitors in each state, such as Funcolands, etc. To say that those other stores 'vanished' because of the economy is misdirection. K-Mart lost out to competitors, as well.

So, no... the sky isn't falling. As has been stated several times, it's the shifting of the shopping paradigm, to sound fancy about it.

Well of course there's alot of money out there otherwise, we wouldn't be giving out a few hundred of billions of dollars to other countries. That money isn't real anyway. More like Liquid loans. So as you were saying, you are suggesting that as the internet businesses become more popular in retailing, the more obsolete the physical retail markets become. However; where do the jobs go to to distribute money for workers so that they can buy said products online. A broke person can't buy products online right?

The shifting of shopping paradigms, yes.. But what about the workers who get payed to help circulate the money?
