If older graphics put you off you wont have much luck, here is all the suggestions that come to my mind:

  • Kotor 1 & 2: This is the closest you are gonna get but graphics are dated.
  • System Shock 2: Even more dated graphics and less story, more horror, but spacey nonetheless.
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Not quite space but its cyberpunk, more openworld focused though so not that much like Mass Effect either.
  • Star Wars The Old Republic: MMO but with a story, you'll have to pay subscription or play it with very limited features though.
  • Dragon Age 2: Not space at all, but virtually identical to the Mass Effect games in all other ways.
  • Jade Empire: Another older Bioware game, dated graphics but one of the first to use the Mass Effect style.. Not set in space.
  • Dead Space Series: This is a horror survival/scavenger game, but atleast its set in space and it does have some story, more for each sequal.

Thats all I got right now. as you can see RPG's set in space is pretty limited. but these are the closest to Mass Effect I could think of.

Unfortunately there aren't many good space games out there, which is odd in my opinion.

@bruxae: Man, with the amount of fantasy RPG's you'd think there would be more space opera ones.

@jonny_anonymous: Indeed, if you look for cyberpunk theres like 2-3 games the last 10 years. All the games that is released tend to go down the same path. I guess its in part because of large companies like EA buying out all the smaller ones the choking them.

@jonny_anonymous: Honestly it doesn't really fit your specifications but I'd recommend you check out Vanquish if you haven't already, similar mechanics to ME, it's just not an RPG. massively underrated game.

I thought about Deus Ex but its not really space.

@revamp: Yea I had a look at that but it's so old, the graphics put me off :(

If only you'd knew what I'd give to play KotOR without being spoiled... I really think you should reconsider and give it a try.

Maybe KOTOR 2? AT least that wouldn't be so bad?

@jonny_anonymous: Kotor 2 is nowhere near as good storywise but it does have superior graphics.. Just make sure to patch it since the original release had a massive amount of bugs.

Id really recommend trying 1 if at all possible, it really is one of the greatest RPG's of all time, it singlehandedly made me intrested in the Star Wars world.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas of course!

It's very similar to Mass Effect in numerous ways.

*Futuristic timeline (so you will find robots/advanced tech)

*Companions (Throughout both games you can meet and recruit different companions to back you up in tough missions)

*Karma (Your actions whether good, bad or neutral will effect the way the game can be played)

*Alternate Endings (A variety of endings based on what you did throughout the game)

*Exploration (The Fallout world is massive and there is so much to do)

If memory serves, you considered yourself a Star Wars fan... yet you have never played KOTOR and you don't want to play it.

You are not a Star Wars fan.

Honestly, I couldn't recommend KOTOR enough; still my favourite game. Yes, the graphics are dated, but the story is so consuming that after a couple of hours you just don't care. I recommend anything by Bioware, though the majority of it isn't set in space. If you liked Mass Effect because of its story and gameplay you can pretty much pick and choose from Bioware's back catalog and be happy with the quality of gameplay (Dragon Age 2 being a notable weak link however).

@jedixman: Well I do like Star Wars but I've only ever seen the film's, played FU and read Heir to the Empire.

@nova_prime_: I played the 30 day trial for EVE it's amazing and scary all at the same time, it's like 10 games melded in to one, you could play that can for a year and still only scratch the surface however there is so much managing involved it's like spreadsheets in space.

So from what I'm getting from this thread is I should STFU and just play KOTOR?

@jedixman: I didn't realize it was an Xbox ham rather than a 360, can you play the older games on a 360?

Dead Space in a way. Other than that, there aren't many games that compare to the expansive universe of ME and the incredible coupling of narrative and gameplay.

Well...The companions being better in New Vegas compared to 3. Aside from Fawkes, your comps could die permanently lol

Anywho..If you're into the whole real time strategy stuff I'd recommend Starcraft 2. They seem to have a few choice parts in the campaign and I've always loved their characters/atmosphere/storylines..Plus Zeratul's a bad ass
