For those unaware of who or what "Pussy Riot" is, it is the name of all female Russian punk group whose three members entered the Cathedral of Christ The Saviour (Russian Orthodox) in Moscow back in March, engaged in a "Punk Prayer" calling on God to overthrow Vladimir Putin's government and after being arrested for "hooliganism" face up to seven years in prison (although neither their trial date or their sentence has been announced).
Although "desecrating a place of worship" by using it as platform for political protest is a pretty serious charge, given that the recent Russian presidential elections that brought Putin back to the Kremlin are arguably rigged, many (including an increasing number of Russians themselves) feel that the punishment( be it jail time or being kept in prison indefinitely) is far too severe and that anyway sections of the Russian Orthodox Church leadership are WAY too close to Putin's United Russia party( this is a venerable tradition - in "The Gulag Archipelago" the late Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn notes that some sections of the Orthodox hierarchy in Soviet times had "one ear turned towards heaven and the other towards the Lubyanka- headquarters of the secret political police founded by Lenin and first known as the "Cheka"- it's no coincidence to my mind that Putin, a former KGB officer is widely known as a "Chekist"( he even reportedly uses the phrase to describe himself).
Free Pussy Riot!
Anybody else think as I do?
