It makes sense if you think about it. We don't vote to determine the president, we vote to determine who our states vote goes to. They do this so that nation wide support is needed to win, otherwise they could just pander to the large population centers and ignore the rest of the country. The only thing really wrong with the Electoral College is that they are not require to vote for the person that wins the majority of their state.
