Mainstream maybe the wrong term, because Eminem, Kanye, J. Cole, even K.Dot are "mainstream". What I do hate is the fact that practically every rap song on the radio lacks content, lyricism, or a message. Its almost all about pretending to be a drug lord, bragging about money, and being a "real" n*gga. Its frustrating that people hear whats on the radio and think that they can judge the entire genre and its fans, but based on what's popular these days you very well could. Now I have no problem with violence, crime, or misogyny, but it must be used in order to explain a harsh reality, as with NWA, Big L, or Tupac, or at the very least be so lyrically impeccable that it bars excuses (Slim Shady LP!). I have no problem with party music, because I'll admit turnin' up is fun as hell, but if that's all you can do musically you have no right to claim to be an hip hop artist. It has to be deeper than AABB rhyme schemes and catchy beats.
@kgb725: if they make you feel that way, it's not my right to tell you otherwise. In fact I do like some mainstream rappers. SOME Drake, J Cole, Kendrick Lemar, Hopsin. But other than that, I feel the rest is made by degenerates..for degenerates
Good point there. There are plenty of rappers with socially conscious and deep messages and/or lyrical talent (some even sneaking onto the radio). Its just that these days most rappers only become successful by fitting this stereotype of callousness, ignorance, and self-destruction disguised as throwin' money, being "real" and "fresh if the feds watching". Rich Homie Quan makes me want to kill myself.
