To the people That like rap/hip-hop do you like mainstream or more underground ?

#2 Edited by The Stegman (29126 posts) - - Show Bio

I like Eminem and Jay...that's about it.

#3 Posted by Bruxae (15864 posts) - - Show Bio

I dont like any.

#4 Posted by Kthanid (84 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't think it's more or less but just a different sound and mood. Most my underground stuff is political or sociological in nature. Then sometimes I want to feel tough and blast old ice cube, tupac, dmx, xzibit. Then sometimes I just want to blast tr catchiest thing around with kanye, lil wayne, jay z, drake. When I want to be pretentious I listen to brother ali, Mac lethal, atmosphere, living legends, cunninglynguists. It's all a matter of set and setting. I listen to more underground just because there is so much more of it but mainstream has more polish and no matter what, you always gotta give respect to the greats who came before

It matters on the song specifically for me. I think Lil Wayne and Kanye have had some terrible songs, they have also had songs I really like. Hip Hop is different that way, so I cant answer this.

I hate most of it not all of it

Eminem is the only mainstream rapper I enjoy now. After the 90's (with some exceptions in the early 2000's), mainstream rap turned to absolute crap.

Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Nas, etc. All of these guys are mainstream so yes, I do enjoy mainstream rap.

@kgb725:

Depends on the mood, sometimes you wanna get buck and swag out, some times you want to here excellent word play and literary device. (Which is used in Rap a lot for those who don't know) I prefer more conscious rap and that which has an afrocentric bent to is as I'm from the old school. But there's a time and place for everything.

I dont hate mainstream hip-hop, but i dislike a lot of its lyrics. I find them too often vain, vulgar and going nowhere.

#12 Posted by _slim_ (16025 posts) - - Show Bio

I enjoy both mainstream and underground.

Do you prefer his content?

#15 Posted by BlazingNova (10842 posts) - - Show Bio

@nelomaxwell: As opposed to someone else like Drake yes. Drake I have no idea what he raps about and when I do it's always about money. Eminem on the other hand raps about how his difficulties raising his children about how the media and other outlets come after him for his explicated lyrics and the song Stan was one of the best of his songs when it comes to pure content.

I don't care about it enough to hate it. What I do hate, is that real music has taken a backseat to it. It's the same with this pop country crap.

No. Have you ever tried to kill legions of demons from Hell while listening to f*cking Gucci Mane?

F*ck no, man.

I like Kendrick (political), Cube (still can be political), Jay (scbp), NaS (i dont want to repeat myself), Drake, Wayne, KanYe, Lupe, SlaughterHouse, and many more

so no I don't hate mainstream rap. It just has a bad rep because it is more of a business than it is about the art. However, that does not mean the art is always in poor taste or not political.

When I like a song I don't take the time to categorize it's origins and decide how much I like it based on how obscure the artist is. I like what I like no matter

I hate a good 98% of all music coming out now days so I guess current hip hop fits in there too. Tho to be fair it'd be hard for me to name more than 5 songs I could tolerate made after 2005.

#26 Posted by ReVamp (23014 posts) - - Show Bio

Underground.

As to whether I hate it, no I don't hate it. I like some of it, and the rest has nothing to do with me.

That was a really blanket statement, bigoted almost.

@nelomaxwell: how is that a "bigoted" statement? Please, I'd like to hear this one -.-

Based on your bias against a genre and probably the culture of Hip-Hop you're stating those who enjoy it lack taste (i.e culture.) I assume you treat the people who you deem tasteless a bit different than you do those you consider have taste.

#36 Posted by Commander_Kane (756 posts) - - Show Bio

@nelomaxwell: Real music sends a message. Real music has a meaning. Real music saves lives. Real music makes you think, feel, carry on through what seemed like the impossible. Real music changes the world. Sinead O'Connor, Phil Collins and Genisis, Paul McCartney and the Beatles, Maynard Keenen James and tool, Michael Jackson, Scooter Ward, Eminem, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. These are just a few real musicians with actual talent. I could name dozens more, and besides Eminem, none of them would be mainstream rappers/pop stars etc..

#37 Posted by ThatGuyWithHeadPhones (14998 posts) - - Show Bio

Well I like Jay, Kayne(when he's not trying to be ''artsy''), and Em hell I even like Wayne...in small doses.

#38 Edited by Cobalion (214 posts) - - Show Bio

I like 90's hip hop.
Todays hip hop is kind of... lame

#39 Posted by BlazingNova (10842 posts) - - Show Bio

@nelomaxwell: no but if they have similar type of songs to eminem then I would give them a chance and listen to their music.

lol well you "assume" a lot about me

I never singled anyone out for their tastes in music, but yet you're doing that to me. Kind of ironic.

@kgb725: if they make you feel that way, it's not my right to tell you otherwise. In fact I do like some mainstream rappers. SOME Drake, J Cole, Kendrick Lemar, Hopsin. But other than that, I feel the rest is made by degenerates..for degenerates

@extremis: Did I mention your music taste? No I said you made a statement about Hip-Hop fans. And I notice you didn't deny my claim, you just attempted to negate it.

#45 Posted by Nelomaxwell (12587 posts) - - Show Bio

@humanrocket: you should. I'm surprised you haven't heard of them. They've been making personal songs before Em became mainstream.

#46 Posted by Juiceboks (13163 posts) - - Show Bio

Well..my favorite rapper is Lupe Fiasco. But I find myself listening to more Army of the Pharaohs, Cunninlynguists, Immortal Tech, Jedi Mind Tricks, Rhapsody, and others like them. So, I suppose underground?

#47 Posted by frogdog (4035 posts) - - Show Bio

Current Mainstream Rap is garbage. Ungerground Rap has always been good.

The 80, 90 and early 00 mainstream is good.

@nelomaxwell: you have it wrong. There's nothing here for me to refute lol. I have a different taste than you. Stop going on about it. Btw, you're only proving my point.... Just sayin.
