Poll Do you consider rap a form of poetry? (38 votes)
Why or why not?
Why or why not?
Sure it is. It follows all of the criteria that makes poetry, well, poetry, and incorporates all of the literary techniques and devices the aforementioned does.
I personally consider it a different branch of poetry.
It pretty much puts to use all the literary devices (Metaphor, simile, alliteration, etc.) that are utilized for poetry so I don't see why not. Only real difference would be rap being done to a beat whereas spoken word poetry is mostly done a capella.
@dccomicsrule2011: @wolverine08: These nggas kno what they talking about.
Lyrical ability in rap nowadays is just as good as it has ever been. I have no idea while these silly "used to be" comments are popping into existence like virtual particles in this thread. A simple breakdown of rhyme schemes, would make anyone knowledgeable enough, come to the conclusion I articulated in the first sentence, really.
Just people thinking trash like Chief Keef represent rap music as of whole - while ignoring the likes of Earl SweatShirt, Kendirck Lamar, and so on and so forth.
Nope, not today's rap, most of them now just talk with a beat in the background, don't even bother to rhyme.
Kendrick Lamar literally ended his newest album with a poem.

Yes, I do. Of course, there are many modern raps that lack decent lyricism as pointed out in a few previous posts, but there are also quite a handful of raps that employ a wide array of literary techniques just as well as any poem.

Oh god. This.
....what did I just listen to?
Poetry.
@kingvenus: Does thou challenge thee to a duel?
@kingvenus: Art thou afraid? That you might have been played?
Depends on the rapper.
This aswell. ~
@kingvenus: Not big on rap, but I wouldn’t consider 2chainz a poet...
@kingvenus: Lol kidding
All music genres are poetry, so yes.
Music genres by themselves are difinitely not poetry, but the lyrics can fall under such a category (and they generally do, unless it's prose thrown in for atmosphere) if they are present.
If we're talking about rap lyrics, yes. It's poetry, but I think that the general quality is not the greatest. I'm not saying that there are not some great writers of rap lyrics out there, but most of those that I've heard don't appeal to me. Well, atleast when we talk about mainstream. I have some favourites among Czech rap, but these tend to be rap used in other genres than hip-hop.
