Poll DC vs Marvel: Which Cinematic Universe Tone do you prefer? (102 votes)

DC 43%
Marvel 53%

For the most part, Marvel films (I'm mostly talking about the Shared Marvel Cinematic Universe) has a very lighthearted tone. They are very family oriented, packed with a fair amount of jokes and has their heroes brightly colored, with a cheerful and humorous tone.

To contrast this, DC films seem to be a lot more serious, bleak and intense. My question is, which tone do you prefer?

Man, that Watchmen poster is more brightly colored than any of the Marvel ones, lol. Then again, having a blue naked dude on your team will do that.

I prefer the DC tone. I like when they take things seriously, but what Marvel is doing has only been an issue for me in Iron Man 2 and Thor 2. In Iron Man and Winter Soldier they actually pull off the real world/dark setting just as well as DC does.

It'd be nice to have a happy medium between the two. But if I have to pick one or the other, I'd go Marvel. DC cinema takes itself way too seriously.

I think films like Iron Man (the first one) and Winter Soldier were a perfect blend of the two. So was DOFP.

But if I had to pick between the extremes, I'd choose DC. The bleakest of DC movies are better than the overly comical Marvel ones (Iron Man 3, Thor 2) imo.

Marvel has a cinematic universe... DC does not. This question would be more answerable after Batman v Superman comes out. I mean there is the Nolan-verse but that is just about batman, the league of shadows and some nobody in a cheap purple suit :)

I've only loved like 2 Disney Marvel Films (CAP2 and IM). The rest rank from meh to good. I honestly think DC will have the much more interesting villains and stories while Marvel will be the fun popcorn flicks. But we'll see after BvS

I prefer DC's tone because when a threat is presented they actually make me care about what's going on. Not saying I don't like Marvel movies, it's just that sometimes they don't really seem to take the threat as seriously as they should. That's just my opinion though.

DC.

I recognize that Marvel makes more quality movies. I still like DC's tone more, and it has some of my favorite CBMs in their list (TDK, Batman Begins, and Watchmen).

I kind of like the different approaches. i just hope DC brings it all together with the consistent quality we are seing from Marvel.

Yeah but I feel like the tone itself is part of why the DC films end up being bad.

DC all the way, I LOVE a more serious tone even in the comics now days if you compare DC to Marvel. DC has a FAR darker tone and theme to it, as well as the stories. I loved the atmosphere in MOS, Nolanverse and Watchmen. Don't forget Constantine, V also among others.

@Captain Marvel: what are you talking about dude? DC movies don't suck, they're just more serious and comic book accurate at least. Marvel movies are made for kids compared to DC.

Marvel's not bad, good if you don't like darker, more serious tones and more family oriented but I personally prefer a darker, more serious tone so I'd go with DC personally.

I don't see why, every time DC tries the light hearted, fun approach we get utter garbage like Catwoman, Batman & Robin and Green Lantern. At least when DC tries to be serious, the movies are good (despite your opinion, TDK trilogy and Watchmen are met with mostly favorable reviews and MOS is...a mixed bag, lol).

I said Watchmen was good. In any case Catwoman was just plain bad, and Batman & Robin was not the same tone as the Marvel films. Green Lantern was bad, but not because of the tone.

The DC cinematic universe doesn't not have a tone yet, it has a single film.

Unless, you're counting any films adapted from the companies, but that includes Blade, Punisher, Green Lantern, Batman and Robin etc.

There are horrible Marvel movies as well as DC ones.

But it's obvious DC has a more serious, truer to comic tone than Marvel does. Marvel is going for the kiddy, casual crowd. DC the older crowd.

Marvel has the edge in the movie world right now, but everything else goes to DC, TV world, Gaming etc

I find it funny that you call it fanboy gold when they kinda take a dump on some comic book stuff, like the mandarin, hulks inexplicable sudden transfromation with a completely different personality than 30 minutes ago, thors whole being a long lived alien, and now peter quills dad has been announced that he won't be the same character from the comics

Because nobody likes a fanboy. Or a fangirl. We don't discriminate.

Anyway, I'd say it like this.

Comparing my favorite DC/Marvel Movie (because you can't compare MoS to The Avengers, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, etc. It's unfair.)

It's me comparing Iron Man to Man of Steel, and in that regard, I got Man of Steel and therefore DC. Probably not the ideal way to do it, but the only way I can really see it working. I like a more serious tone. I love Tony's humor, but at times it gets annoying.

I think Marvel's tone is better suited for the superheroes they put on screen. The "serious" DC tone only works well for a few heroes (like Batman) and really shouldn't be the template for the DCCU, I think that Man of Steel was a great example of that. Also, I think that the tone of the MCU offers something that the DCU so far hasn't given us and that is "heart" and that in my eyes is one of the most important things a superhero film can give us.

haha so true. When I was a kid I would have found Marvel movies more cool probably with the cheesy jokes etc but now that I'm older i prefer a more mature perspective which DC gives me.

I dunno about you guys but I prefer my heroes to not have a stick up their ass and constantly moan and angst.

Which also means I'm rather unfond of the first spiderman trilogy or the X-Men movies. Crack a smile FFS.

I mean I like MoS and the Dark Knight trilogy but they're not really fun to watch. They're enjoyable but I don't leave the theater with a smile.
