So I've been trying to watch some horror films lately..Idk why, maybe just looking for a scare but lately everything we've got in our current times seems to suck. I've watched some classics of course like Evil Dead 2,The Shining,The Thing,Poltergeist, and such just to name a few..But none of it has really "scared" me or really bugged me. I watched Insidious 1 and 2 recently and although imo it wasn't all that scary..It did seem kind of creepy or at least Doll Girl in number 1 kinda spooked me and the closet scene in 2 got me as well.

I still seem to possess a fear of the dark(well not really the dark, more so what's in it)so I try to play off that with what I watch. With that said I gave Paranormal Activity a shot..That felt like a letdown as well. I'll give it credit that it did get creepy with how Katie would get up and stand there for a long time on the video but other then that everything just felt kind of boring, also Micah was an ass a majority of the time and that ruined the film for me. Anyways I've tried looking up some horror films but a majority seem to have low ratings or they're just not very good.

@gambit474: Ever seen the first 2 Halloweens?
The Ring was the last horror film to really get me personally but I honestly can't remember why it scared me at all.

The Cabin In The Woods, The Haunting, House on Haunted Hill, Trailer Park of Terror (this is more campy/fun), the Evil Dead remake....

There are different kinds of "horror" films IMO. Some of the old school European 80's films are disturbingly cringe worthy. I wont name them here cause they're pretty f'd up (if you really wanna know PM me).

As far as mainstream horror my personal fav(s) are House of a 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects. Neither are jump out of your seat scary but still good. Jacobs Ladder is another really good film. More a supernatural thriller though then an out right horror flick.

The original Halloween is a must watch, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night Of The Living Dead as well.

There is alot more to horror films than just being scared too. I see a fair amount of these types of threads. I would recommend tons of great horror films that don't really scare me, but work in other ways to bring out negative emotions, and fears. Or ones that are just fun to watch, and bring comedy and horror together.

I just think that when people ask these questions that they simply just want to be scared they are missing out on alot.

Sinister was a pretty creepy movie, Uh other than that Cabin in the woods is a fun parody of the industry. Rob Zombies Devils Rejects is a pretty good.

@gambit474: To me, there's a difference between a ''good'' horror film and a ''scary'' horror film. There are TONS of good horror movies, that is, films that are unique, well shot, has strong acting, and cool visuals. Friday the 13th is a ''good'' horror film because it pretty much created the modern ''Cabin in the Woods'' horror genre (well, technically Evil Dead did..but still) And had a great twist by making the killer a distraught mother instead of the standard psychopath. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a ''good'' horror film because it was a completely unique idea to have the killer stalk you in your dreams. Poltergeist, The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, are all ''good'' in terms of film making.

But scary? That's a different matter. I'm a grown adult, very, very few films actually scare me. Sure they make me jump with "jump scares" that's just a loud noise interrupting silence, but to truly frighten me, there's only been one film to do that, and that's Paranormal Activity. I know so say it's boring, and I can understand that, but speaking from personal experience, it scared the sh*t outta me. The subtly of the cinematography, the ''found footage'' method, not actually seeing the monster for the entire film, but only seeing its actions; cause to me, once I see a physical monster, all realism is gone and any fear accompanying it goes with it. I remember seeing it in theaters on a whim, and going home. Literally every bang, every creak made me look around in the darkness, the fear left te theater and came with me. I remember one night I woke up and my fridge door was open, and I KNOW I didn't leave it open, made me think of the film. That's why Paranormal Activity might be my favorite horror movie..or at least in the top 5.

ANNNNNNYWAY end rant/

Some good horror movies

-Ju-On (Japanese film that The Grudge is based on)

-The Falculty

-Trick r Treat

-[REC] (Spanish film that Quarantine is based on)

-Grave Encounters

-Audition

-One Missed Call (Japanese version)

-Shutter (Thai version)

-Blair Witch Project

@hyiena: off topic but what is VHS about? Always wanted to watch it but at the same time didn't catch my attention.

On topic- Try the Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist(If that doesn't make you poop your pants I don't know what will), and Scary Movie 5.

actually I read the evil dead remake sucked pretty bad..Then again I figured as such since I doubt they'd have a character that people would like the same as Ash. Steg yes Paranormal Activity somewhat worked because it played on the fact that some people have had that occurrence where something happened and they couldn't explain it..When I was really little my dad had just closed the door to my room and I don't remember how long it was but I remember seeing this shadow on the wall..I could've swore I saw that thing start moving and dancing. Maybe it was nothing, but it's stuff like that that I felt PA tried to play off on. V/H/S I was considering to watch but couldn't make a decision..That's the one with the freaky vampire chick right?

I have the same problems as you.I watch horror classics or movies that everyone gets frightened by but they just don't affect me at all.The only one that scared the sh*t out of me was Sinister but even this movie when I watched it for the second time just didn't scare me at all.

@gambit474: The new Evil Dead is amazing and I grew up on the original movies. This was the Evil Dead that Sam Raimi wanted to make originally. It's truly horrifying and not goofy at all. The climax is one of the coolest things I've seen in a movie in a while and although I saw it weeks ago I can't stop thinking about it.

@hyiena: I was gonna mention CH but figured it sided more on the graphically disturbing rather then horror (though everyone's interpretation of horror is different). Still, its really more of a torture porn flick then anything else.

I've never been affected by "horror" so much... jump scares, ghosts, killers, creepy music, all that... I like those movies, but I can't think of any instance where I've ever truly been frightened by one. What DOES get me isn't so much horror as the "graphically disturbing" subgenre floating around. Movies like A Serbian Film, Hostel, Cannibal Holocaust, Deadgirl, and I know its a cliche but, The Human Centipede (especially the second one) downright horrify me.

@hyiena: A Serbian Film is... I really don't know how much about it that I can even say here, its pretty damn twisted. I only sat through the whole thing because I didn't want to wimp out in front of my friends. Its not really a horror movie, its just disturbing and sick. Read the Wikipedia summary if you want to get an idea of how far it goes.
