Lol I was volunteering at a community kitchen and I asked one of the other volunteers this question. She was an old Christian woman lol. She got pretty upset when I asked her this (as much "upset" as an old lady will get). But it blew my mind the first time I heard it.
Can God create a rock that he himself cannot lift?

lol what did she say to you?
Pickin' at old ladies, 'eh. :P
yes, god can create a rock that he can't lift and lift it accordingly.
And pretty much this.
Lol this question is as illogical as it is asinine.
But I suppose my opinion is yes, he could.

Maybe a tiny pebble, in the way of nothing, and that particular, tiny speck of rock, He cannot lift. Or, create such a rock, then make it vanish since He can't lift it.
I hope there is an all powerful God out there ,things seem to perfect here on earth for there not to be some all powerful being not to be behind it!electricity,water perfect orbit ect.,So if God wanted to he could make 2+2=5 and you would be none the wiser,He can do anything.and some people would call you blasphemous for even asking such a question!
@galactus1967: ..It's like Christian Questions 101.
The question itself makes no sense.
yes, god can create a rock that he can't lift and lift it accordingly.
@noone301994: It is a funny question but the "point" of the question is to show that the word omnipotence is meaningless. If god can create a rock that he cannot not lift, then he is not omnipotent which is a contradiction.

If a being was ominpotent, they could then transcend the laws of logic as we know them.
Thus making this question inane.

Makes sense to me.
@jmarshmallow: I agree the question is inane.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!! Any true omimpotent being is not bound by mere logic.
yes, god can create a rock that he can't lift and lift it accordingly.
You are negating your first statement.
@jmarshmallow: He can't create a square circle. . .
@overlordarthas: He means he could create a rock he "shouldn't" be able to lift, but because he is all powerful still lift it.

God is also a being of reason, remember that when he said that all those who sinned will die, by that statement, no one will be save. So he send Jesus as a work around to the rule. I do not think a shortcut like that will suffice.
@overlordarthas: I don't agree with that I was just trying to explain what he meant by his statement, how have you been arthas been a while

Oh ok. ;p
Just got back from self-exile.
@overlordarthas: Yeah I haven't been too busy on here myself, too busy in real life to function on here consistently, hows life for you and the philippines?

False

Pretty good. I'm addicted to a mobile game as of late.
@overlordarthas: Clash of Clans?
@overlordarthas: Clash of Clans?
Nope. Ragnarok Valkyrie Uprising
@overlordarthas: Lol never heard of it, let me guess it has vikings... ;)

@eisenfauste: Nope. True.
@lukehero: There is no way with in reason that God can create a square circle it denies logic it cannot be done. Omnipotent doesn't mean bust the foundation this universe functions on......

that's the logic of the long winded answer of this question.
@eisenfauste: Well I imagine being God he would simply change the definition of a Circle to encompass that of a square.
This... Omnipotent means he can do whatever he wants. Our entire ideals of logic, could be altered at his own whimsy. Up becomes down, left becomes right, white becomes black, squares become circles. All these things and more, things we are not even able to contrive would be possible for an Omnipotent being.
I reckon that Him creating a rock He couldn't life or some other action He couldn't perform would be Him putting a handicap on Himself that He could remove any time He wanted to.
I also find that video game analogies have helped me make sense of things.

Yes it does...
