Can a vigilante be effective?

I`m not talking Batman or The Punisher, but actual vigilates. People who decide to take the law into their own hands. Can a single man significantly lower the percentage of crime in a city? If so, how?

The problem with trying to be one in real life is that when you're dead, you're dead. On top of that, depending on where you live and the level of criminal activity, being a vigilante might embolden the crooks. The numbers game won't work in the vigilante's favor either.

In a word, no.

In a longer word, not at all. Even a team of ex-military guys with a full slate of weapons, ammo, equipment and funding would be hard pressed to do damage against even the HA, let alone Cartels or International Crime Syndicates. As soon as any of these groups come under pressure, they would band together to take the vigilantes down. Real world aint like the movies, money can buy an alliance between every gang in the world. Even the Crips and Bloods would bury the hatchet for a few million.

On top of that, the minute our Vigilante gang makes their presence known, the government would come down on it like a bad heroin crash. I'm talking inter-agency task forces, military support, satellite and drone tracking, and a bottomless pit of money to throw at the vigilantes. If they weren't killed by the crooks, the government will get them eventually.

No. Outnumbered. Can't actually dodge bullets like in comics. Will get arrested by cops. Can't take on more than two people at a time. Won't know when or where crimes are going on. No.

It mostly depends on the place where he is. So yes and no. In a big city, It wound´t work but in very small city, he may be able to reduce some of the crime. Also It depends on how much organized is crime in the city.

No, in truth I would trust the Police more.
