@laflux: I can only speak from my own personal experience with regards to what I've seen having grown up in East saint Louis. I can say that this is an extremely complex issue that runs very deep in our society on various levels. One of the biggest issues I saw growing up is the way that we are brought up. I'm an exception because I had an outstanding mother and grandparents raise me with values and ethics but other guys I grew up with were essentially raised by children themselves. They were raised with a mentality to just get by and not to stride for greatness. They were raised with the idea that, because the world is already against you, f*** em'. My contemporaries back home just don't really want anything; sure they have desires but they lack the ambition or confidence to go after anything. In short, they've been broken broken by a life that kicked them when they were down and they were never taught by anyone to get back up. One heartbreaking story is that I was talking to one of my childhood friends a few years back when I. Was about to start college and, I. Listening to his ambitions, it broke my heart that they were so meager. He didn't want school, a career, a family or anything typical of someone that age. He just wanted government assistance. And why should he want anything else? He was raised with that level of value. Raised with that type of thinking. So, in my opinion, that is the biggest challenge facing us today.

1. I had some extra cash while running errands for my mom and decided to take a look around the local comic shop. I've been a reader since that day.

2. I'd say Fables because it's very good and very long so I'd have plenty of reading.

3. My favorite writer would have to be Brian K Vaughan. Favorite artist is, without a single doubt, Travis Charest.
