Artist Breakdown- Danny Brown.

Danny Brown is one of the hottest acts to come from Detriot in recent years. Personally, he is one of my favorite rappers in the game, and in this piece I'm going to convince you why you should give him a listen.

Overview

Perhaps it was fated that I would love Danny Brown. His skinny jean wearing, punk haired attire was a refreshing change from alot of traditional rappers, and was so radical that it apperently cost him a contract with G-Unit. Danny Brown's unique style extends to his rapping, vocally he can vary between a growling rottweiler or a very high pitched voice which is rather hard to describe. Lyrically, Danny Brown is probably best known for his outrageous hilarious bars, in which he refers to his phallus in a variety of different manners, from stretching from Earth to Venus, to tasting like "tropical fruit skittles". Or dedicating entire songs to going down on girls. So looking back, its a small wonder I took a strong liking to him.

With his alternative style, both in rapping and dressing, and outspoken nature, it may be easy to compare him to Odd Future, but that would be unfair. The Horrrorcore and violence with framed pretty much all of O.F work until Tyler released Wolf and Earl realesed Doris simply isn't a factor in Danny Brown's world, and instead a window into a life of excess, filled with Sex, Drugs ( with a heavy emphasis on Adderall and Molly), combined with the highs and lows of such action is painted. Danny Brown's intention isn't to offend, that comes off more naturally (depending on how easily your jimmies are rustled), and is certainly isn't forced- it just feels we are along for a ride, which he doesn't intensify or moderate because of the listeners.

When listening to songs like Admiral Adderall or Outer Space, it may seem that Danny Brown's persona is simply one of one who endorses the party life style, but a dive deeper into his discography reveals the drawbacks of such a full on lifestyle. Die like a Rockstar, Party all the Time, 30 certainly highlights this, with 30 tying this into his desire to succeed as a rapper, and his habits among the things holding him back. Drinks on me, give a somber account on the negative influence on alcohol. We also have the back drop of Detriot as a setting for all these antics, and the poverty of the hood comes through strong, talking about using food stamps to "buy wonderbread", or using "fake seasoning" on his chicken wings.

Okay, so where do I start?

Danny Brown's most critically acclaimed work is the album XXX, and is probably his feature which best reflects what I've just said about him (and to be fair most of the songs I've referenced have come from that album). This album definitely plays more to the outrageous, party side of Danny Brown, and as someone who has pretty much spent the last 3 years of my life going out and getting wasted (uni life), its what hits me the most. If you want to listen to something a bit more sombre, I would suggest his lastest album, Old and his rather underatted The Hybrid. Danny has also featured heavily with other artists, most commonly with Black Hippy (who he has a good relationship with). He was one of the rappers, featured on Detriot vs Everybody, but probably his most famous feature was on ASAP's Rocky's One Train, where he gave arguably the best verse in a song including Kendrick, Bronson, Yelawolf and Joey Badass.

3. Drinks on Me- The Hybrid

Drinks on Me is a rather somber story about Alcohol abuse, and the use of it and partying to escape a rather mundane and sad lifestyle. There is also a nice underlay of people who use alcohol as a way to bring on sexual encounters, i.e by going out, getting wasted and trying to get laid.

2. Outer Space- XXX

Outer Space is an apt name for this song. Here, Danny Brown's Voice, and lyrics are so out thier, you might think he is from out of space. From "f*cking your mother with two rubbers", to "smoking on Cactus", Danny is everywhere. Its probably one of his most female unfriendly songs, and he actually apologises for his mysoginy, before asking girls to watch porn with him... lol.

I only heard a few songs from him but from what I heard I liked it

Nice breakdown, but I'm not sold on Danny yet. I find his voice/style hard on the ears.

Listen to him more, you will learn to love his voice... you're just hating on danny because he has a unique flow and a unique voice. Stay listening to only monotonous rappers like drake then.

Sick review. I fuck with Danny personally. The voice was somewhat hard to get used to, but once I got past that, it became easy to enjoy his stuff. His sense of humor is hilarious and his actual writing ability is dam good once you peel away the layers. Probably the best new talent out of Detroit along with Big Sean IMO.

I only know him from this song he did with Black Milk and he killed that sh*t. Haven't gotten around to listening to his more recent stuff though.

He's aight. Better than a lot of stuff being played on the radio.

He needs to get more music out.
