curious to see the responses to this question. why or why not?
Are you proud to be an American?
Not proud as I don't find nationality something to take pride in. I am more along the lines of content, there are places that are not so nice in the world.
I'm not even proud to be a human being. Our race sucks.
Go Donkeys <3
I'm Canadian.
like wolverine.......

Damn straight!
I won't say I'm all "MURICA F*CK YEAH!!" But I'm glad I live here. We're no better than the rest of the world we just have more shit.
Hell yes I'm proud to be American but I'm not proud of the puppet politicians, the banks and the corporations that are ruining the country.
This x10.
Be proud to be an American, people. Just because the people who run it are crap, doesn't mean our country and what it's suppose to stand for is.
Hell yes I'm proud to be American but I'm not proud of the puppet politicians, the banks and the corporations that are ruining the country.
This, but being proud as an American for me is not because I was born here. This country has certain ideals, morals, that I agree with whole-heartedly. Do we always practice them? No, but we damn well should. There are sh*t people everywhere, it is not an American disease. We may not be perfect, but we have done a lot of good in our short time as a nation.
I'm proud to be an American and I believe if you are not then LEAVE or make an attempt to fix it. My family came to the U.S. for a better life. I have family members who would like to live here. Go live in another country if you hate America too much. I also believe people who love being Texan, New Yorker, and etc is someone who loves being American. I'm super proud to be a Californian so I guess I gotta be a proud American since CA is in the United States of America.
Don't get me wrong America is terrible too but no worse or no better than other countries.
I view the U.S. as the land of immigrants. No one here is truly a native and because of that our immigrant ancestors created some great things.
Hip Hop, Jazz, and Salsa... yes Salsa was created in the U.S. by Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and etc who were living in NY.
I know that the elitist European Americans are pathetic and stupid but I love that I was born in East LA.
I'd type more but I'm on my mobile account.
P.S. Frrrffrfrfffrrrrr Rock politicians they usually suck. Well at least in MX, and the US they usually suck.

I am proud to be an American. And I have spent time in a uniform for this country to be what it is. What I don't like is most of the Federal politicians. And especially the current version of the Nazi party masquerading as the GOP
I'm indifferent towards being an American. I mean I was kind of born here, and have never lived anywhere else so I can't really judge.
Hell yes I'm proud to be American but I'm not proud of the puppet politicians, the banks and the corporations that are ruining the country.
I'm with there Herc.
Hell yea! Our problems aside, still love this country. Now if the government could just get its' shit together.
: Because we kick ass.
That makes very little sense, but kind of proves the point, so ok.
I want to say yes I am but then I think about our politics and our government and how headstrong we are at times and how high and mighty we look at ourselves and think about all the thinks we did to other countries and other people and sometimes I just don't know.
Why is national pride so emphasized in American society, anyways?
That's simply due to nationalism. You can find the element of nationalism in most countries around the world, not just in the United States. lol
It certainly isn't as rampant in, say, Canada. What makes the states so different?

It may have something to do with our history. America has accomplished a lot in comparison to other countries around the world. I could make a long list of America's accomplishments throughout history.
...and I could make a long list of, oh, England's accomplishments throughout history, or Canada's accomplishments throughout history, or virtually any other country throughout history. Countries tend to accomplish a lot, what with being large communities of people. America isn't unique in accomplishment.
The only time American pride seems relevant to me is when someone from somewhere else busts their ass to get here and becomes a citizen. Then I can see having pride in this country. You've earned something. But with me? This is just where my parents happened to bump uglies. So...I'm guess I'm just indifferent.

Nailed it in one, Hawkeye.

This. And I don't know why people from USA tend to only consider themselves american, you know, from north to south america we are all american. People of USA are just usaian or something on those lines. but whatever
Second Question...
good responses so far. let me ask you this now; do you believe socioeconomic status or ethnicity have any bearing on whether someone is proud to be an American? if yes then in what capacity? if no then explain why you don't believe it has any bearing on someones pride as an American citizen.
Bonus question
How knowledgeable are you about the history of America?
