Basketball is boring anyway, Badminton is where it's at.

And it never occurred to anyone that Nigeria's national Olympic basketball team is a first rate FOURTH rate team in this whole competition? Pffft...world wants to find fault with anything the USA does anymore. Theworld just wants to see us teeter like we did at the 2002 FIBA World Championships and fail like we did at Athens, 2004.

My point is this is a sport, someone has to win, someone has to lose. Its not like our team taunted them for losing or anything, they just won by a lot. It would be more insulting if the team had held back. No one wants pity points.

#10 Edited by KnightRise (3620 posts) - 9 months, 16 days ago - Show Bio

There's a place for sportsmanship, and there's competition. This isn't a pickup game versus your handicapped eight year old neighbor. This is the Olympics, if we're the best you're damned right we had better play like it! It's insulting to the other nations if we half-a$$ and take it easy on them.

@joshmightbe: did you read the article? No where did Nigeria, or anyone else ask for an apology. The post conference interviewer just asked the USA's couch if the team felt it was point-jockeying. The thread title is misdirecting; we weren't villified.

@KnightRise: I didn't claim the Nigerians were upset, it just pissed me off that the article tried to vilify the team despite having nothing to back it up aside from the fact that we won.

Sore losers is what I say.

At least Phelps shook the second place winner's hand. Better then what he did last time.

Aren't we one of the only countries with a real basketball team anyway?

And we certainly have most of the best players.

@OmegaDynasty: The people that lost aren't even the ones who complained about it, it was reporters after the fact

#16 Posted by Dernman (11345 posts) - 9 months, 16 days ago - Show Bio

I never hear reporters ask that question when it comes to America and losing in Soccer/Football.

France, Spain, Argentina, and Brazil usually have some good teams, depends. And Russia is looking pretty good this year. Its probably going to be US vs Russia for the Gold.

While I understand what they're saying we're talking about adults here. This isn't a dad playing one on one with his five year old. This is serious competition between adults. Do they really want people to start not trying just because somebodies feelings might get hurt? If I was on the Nigerian team and I won because the USA decided not to try I'd feel cheated.

#29 Posted by Duke_Nasty (1017 posts) - 9 months, 16 days ago - Show Bio

I agree with most ofm the comments. If the U.S stopped playing hard cause they were ahead it would be even more insulting.

I was joking before about Badminton, but in all honesty, it's true, tennis is much more exciting to watch and play than Basketball.

@The Stegman: I prefer playing Basket-ball to watching it, but Tennis is fantastic to both watch and play. Easily one of the most skillful and underrated sports.

Spain and Argentina are pretty decent. Some of the eastern European countries sometimes sport decent teams.

Spain and France were both doing wel. Serbia used to be fantastic at basketball as well. Don't know what happened.

This is the olympics. It's not michael jordan vs a ten year old these are grown men representing their country. They should go all out however, if we were taunting and other stuff it would be a different story.
