The official dictionary of the Swedish language will introduce a gender-neutral pronoun in April, editors at the Swedish Academy have announced.

“Hen” will be added to “han” (he) and “hon” (she) as one of 13,000 new words in the latest edition of the Swedish Academy’s SAOL.

The pronoun is used to refer to a person without revealing their gender – either because it is unknown, because the person is transgender, or the speaker or writer deems the gender to be superfluous information.

“For those who use the pronoun, it’s obviously a strength that it is now in the dictionary,” one of the editors, Sture Berg, told AFP on Tuesday.

The word “hen” was coined in the 1960s when the ubiquitous use of “han” (he) became politically incorrect, and was aimed at simplifying the language and avoiding the clumsy “han/hon” (s/he) construction.

But the word never really took hold.

It resurfaced around 2000, when the country’s small transgender community latched on to it, and its use has taken off in the past few years.

It can now be found in official texts, court rulings, media texts and books, and has begun to lose some of its feminist-activist connotation.

The Swedish Academy’s dictionary is updated every 10 years. New entries are determined by their frequency and relevance.

The new edition goes on sale on 15 April.

Lots of cultures have gender-neutral pronouns. In Indonesia, where I come from, the pronoun equivalent for he and she is 'dia'.

However, I do believe that adding this for 'SJW reasons is stupid.

Comrade, let's look at what we have in Russia. On (he), Ona (she), Ono (it). Male gender, female gender and no gender or middle gender. I think that it's enough for good using, yes?)
The problem is not with having pronouns.

My problem isn't the use of gender-neutral terms. My problem is the fact that the word is being added simply for PC reasons and appears unnecessary.

Not to mention that I personally would find it offensive to be called an "it".

Yah and in some cultures and populations there are even fourth and fifth genders. Not only that but some cultures and populations from the beginning of mankind's history have had third genders. Frankly its disgusting. Those crazy SJW's have found a time machine I think, how else can this be? Its not like gender is a social construct and something different to biological sex. Well I'm glad I am not ignorant and know whats what. Silly Sweden and superior national statistics to most other countries, wow that country is going down the drain fast. SMH next think you know people are going to be allowed to marry Elephants and be robot gender!

It's not really a big deal. A gender neutral word does no harm nor good. It just is.

This does sound like an example of the PC police; however. If the word had taken hold naturally and was being added to the official dictionary, then there is literally no story here, but the fact that they are making it a word officially even though it's never really become well established is suspect.

Still, it's a word that you can choose to use or not use. It's not a big deal. On the other hand, we have issues like the IS, Russia, debt and fascism which affect every person of every sexual identity. People on both sides of these issues need to reexamine their priorities.

Before that we had really long negotiations with finns, we offered them some land in north in exchange for the Isthmus and Vyborg. They refused. So because of events that were alrady in motion in Europe it ended rushly with war. With undue losses and in too long time, of course. I guess that's happened when one rush in war without due preparations and considerations... Perhaps that's why Hitler decided to attack USSR after all - he saw weakness and decided to exploit it. In roughly same year we beat japans on Khalkin Gol so hard that they decided that it's a bad idea to mess with Russia and so they fought for the most time of the war with US.
