To the Christian members of CV, I was wondering if a few of you (no more than 20-25 or so) wouldn't mind answering a few survey questions for an assignment I have to complete. No names are required, just gender and age. The questions have to do with how your life relates to the Bible and are answered in either multiple choice or a scale of 1 - 5 etc. There won't be more than a dozen or so.

You can PM me your interest, if you'd like and I'll PM you the questions in a day or two.

Your participation would be much appreciated.

In any case, beyond the request in this thread, I do have a general question that I'm just asking out of interest (so the thread isn't pointless and can actually warrant discussion here)...

Do you feel that a person can be a good Christian without reading the Bible?

@comicstooge: Not reading the whole bible cover-to-cover will not give you an automatic ticket to Hell, but if you are wanting to give your life to Christ, then you'd be pretty crazy to not give time to learning about him from the original book.

Send the questions by me when you're ready :)

I can give you a hand.

As for the answer to the question: yes, you can be a good Christian without reading the Bible. People have been guided for centuries by the teachings of their local churches. However, do you really want to just take the word of some minister. Reading the Bible allows you to think for yourself and a sermon is just a guide to the Word of G-d.

Not to mention the Bible has been interpreted in many different ways by people who read and study it. Hence why there isn't just one denomination in Christianity. You have United Pentecostal, Pentecostal, Baptist, Trinitarian, Apostolic, Latter Day Saints, Anglicanism... so many more! Reading the Bible yourself (rather than just taking someone's word for it) allows you to figure out how you interpret the Bible and are able to decided on a denomination that feels right for you. If you're in the denomination you are not connecting with, it won't help with your spiritual growth :(

When someone asks you about the Bible, you'll just be repeating what you heard, rather than speaking from the heart from what you read yourself. It's just not the same.

You know, the only Bible that gives you the full unedited story is the original non-translated greek version.

That said, I'm pretty sure you can read a cole's notes version and be just fine.

Can a person be a good doctor without reading any medical texts? The Bible is crucial to understanding how to be a Christian.

I'd just prefer to not fill out a survey. No offense to the OP, but I'm just too busy.

This, definitely. Different parts of God's word touches us differently, when we speak His word, we need to be capable of doing so because it's what He laid on our heart to say. Speaking God's word from the heart means so much more than repeating words you heard from a preacher, priest or teacher- & it has the capability of touching the heart of the person you're speaking to in a far more powerful way. ( I used to be a Sunday school teacher for youth & teens & was almost a junior bishop, so believe me when I say this.)

A lot of people also forget that WE are the church- we, God's people, His children as a whole. The buildings called churches & temples are just where we gather. The Bible even stresses this- & we all have to interpret & understand His word in our own way.

And sure, I'll be glad to participate.

Do you feel that a person can be a good Christian without reading the Bible?

How would you consider your self a Christian without knowing it's source? How or why would you call yourself a Christian if you haven't read or understood what you are calling your self? That makes absolutely no sense to me? I think it's fair to say people couldn't take you seriously if you don't even know what you stand for and would be very easy for someone to counter you who's read the bible.

my opinion is this..

the bible is one of the best ways for god to talk to you... i cant tell you how many times i felt down... and god gave me the perfect bible verse to cheer me up. it is a necessity in your spiritual life. it has examples on how to be a christian. and examples on exactly what not to do. also if you didnt read the bible... you wouldbt understand preachings,or everything that happened to jesus on the cross
