I found this subject line in my email from a nun:
"I am being arrested-Please Help"
My gut reaction is to report this as spam or delete it. But against my better judgment, I opened it, praying to God that my computer wouldn't be fried by some virus. This is what I got:
"Hi,ON AUG. 23,2011-I WILL BE ARRESTED AT. ST. JOHNS CONVENT AT 10:30 am I WILL BE TAKEN TO CHEFS' RESTAURANT FOR MDA's LOCK-UP.I NEED YOUR HELP TO BAIL ME OUT. MY BAIL IS SET FOR $1600. ????? I MAY BE SPENDING THE REST OF MY LIFE AT CHEFS. For years I have been teaching young people about Mattie Stepanek. Mattie is a poet, a prophet,a peacemaker, and a philosopher. He is an inspiration to people of all ages. *** learn about Mattie -http://www.mattieonline.com/ ; Last year I met Mattie's Mom..."
It gets really boring after that. I didn't read this message very carefully so I decided to call the parish rectory to inform them that the nun's e-mail had been hacked. I learned that this is basically a way to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I read the e-mail more closely and learned from other people that this is a stunt done by public figures to raise money for charity. I also remember some mascot being locked up years ago.
So what do you think of people going to "jail" for charity? What if you would like the person to stay in "jail" (this not the place to tell you horror stories about nuns smacking your hands). I happen to like this nun and she has a good heart, but I think there are better ways raise money: Shave heads, dunk tanks, pies in the face, sound more acceptable.
