A hunter from Utah is getting death threats on social media after comedian Ricky Gervais posted this picture of her with a giraffe she killed on his Twitter page. The woman in the photo, Rebecca Francis, is a hunter and outdoorswoman who won a TV competition called Extreme Hunting in 2010 and hosted the show Eye of the Hunter. Francis, a mother of three and a stepmother to five, said she has hunted zebras, lynx, brown and black bears, Alaskan moose, sheep, rams, deer, goats, and elks, even hunting while she was pregnant.

She wrote on her website that she’s also a freelance writer and co-owns a website called Alti2ude Outdoors, an online hunting community. Twitter users began immediately attacking Francis, with some sending her death threats.

Francis defended herself in a statement on the HuntingLife.com Facebook page yesterday, saying the photo was from five years ago and that she hunted the giraffe because it was “inevitably going to die soon.”

We just connected with Rebecca Francis and got a statement on her Giraffe hunt that anti-hunters are attacking her for. Rebecca said, "When I was in Africa five years ago I was of the mindset that I would never shoot a giraffe. I was approached toward the end of my hunt with a unique circumstance. They showed me this beautiful old bull giraffe that was wandering all alone. He had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull. He was past his breeding years.

She wrote that every part of the giraffe was used after he was killed:

I chose to honor his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second. Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewelry, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good

I personally don't see any wrong doing on her part and like always Twitter users are overacting.

Look at her, lying down in the grass smiling next to a dead giraffe, just for a selfie.

Arnt they endangered? Im not a PETA radical but if she killed a endangered animal then i understand the hate.

People should have better things to worry about, then some a pic of a dead Giraffe - I mean - who cares? Sending death threats behind something so trivial is down right pathetic, as well as appalling.

They should be sending their threats to the preservations and parks that took her thousands of dollars for permission to kill this animal. She did nothing illegal.

But if what she says is true, that every part of the giraffe was used in some way, then I don't have that much of a problem with it. The pictures though are a little much.

Also, stfu Ricky Gervais. Crying on facebook and twitter and making people rage and send death threats to the girl. F*ckin can't stand that guy.

If they were at the top of the Food Chain, a Giraffe shouldn't be complaining about a "lowly" human being killed either. But if we happen to be on equal terms, than I suspect killing a giraffe would be tantamount to killing a human, so yeah - this analogy still fails, really.

Also I assume from the picture she killed it with a bow? That seems.. Unecessarily slow and painful, there's no way you take down an animal that big quickly with that thing.

She deserves whatever bad things come her way. Hunting exotic animals isn't necessary in this day & age, it's just a douchey way to feel special about yourself. Personally, I hope a lion guts her.

OP, I've removed the pictures. People can go look if they want to see it, not everyone has an interest in seeing dead animals (and some, including myself, find it genuinely disturbing).

On topic, I don't think she deserves anything horrible to happen to her, the personal threats are kinda messed up. It's understandable though that this is something people feel strongly about

Presuming you eat meat, then you already buy into the idea that it's okay to kill animals for your pleasure as long as it is for a greater purpose, and the giraffe was used in every way possible. This animal was ill, so killing it quickly was actually a mercy. You allow cows to be violently slaughtered in your name well before their natural lifespan would end. Chickens raised for eggs and food suffer much more than that giraffe did in the few moments before it bled out.

If someone wants to give up all meat products, than they have a right to object in this case, but if not, then those objecting are just saying, "Murder my food for me, but don't post any pictures of murdered animals. I don't want to think about all the animals I hire others to kill on my behalf."

@batwatch: Simply put, there are some people I've no interest in being kind to or tolerant of. Also, I'm vegan, and I agree wholeheartedly with the latter parts of your post.
