I was reading time magazine and I read that many companies are planning to turn the internet from a free service into a pay per kilo/mega/gigabyte system.  This is outrageous!   This is like turning all  television programs into a pay per view programming.

If the internet is no longer free, it would be crushing to the populace.  First world countries are massively dependent on the internet, to force them to pay for every little bye used is just extortionism.

that would be pretty tragic

It's in addition to the bill.  Like how you pay for phone service and other stuff has an extra fee.

I'm middle upper class, and my entire family out to third cousins twice removed lives in one really large house.  And we always chip in, each family is about middle upper class so together we are very wealthy.  And we got here by being penny pinchers.   Old habits stick on you.  Saving every coin since the 1200's.

P.S convert to the metric system!

We kicked your german arse in ww1 we can do it again.  And this time quite easily with nukes.

P.S the current bill we pay is a fixed bill.  Would you like to have an extra $40-100 on it?  Thought so.

i still dont think it's possible the internet is a free medium..that so many people in the WORLD have acess to i dont see a way that buisness people, could possibly make  more than 3/4 of the world pay for internet service

That certainly didn't stop the idea of a restroom you have to pay to use from developing until fierce resistance shot it down.

That's exactly my thought. I think it's going to actually move in the other direction - in the same way many people don't have home phone service with cell phones, it's likely that since cell phones now have unlimited internet access plans, the net will move towards being free altogether; especially as technology increases.

Verizon is already starting to roll it out in some places. Charging more money after people use more than a certain amount of throughput.

#30 Posted by Vrakmul (23849 posts) - - Show Bio

Comcast is getting ready to use it, as well as three other major companies.  And minor companies are following suit.

If the internet was no longer free I would probably just be on for once or twice a week for my e-mails, research and web comics so long as it wasn't required for work otherwise.

Gotta say it wouldn't surprise me. And it also wouldn't surprise me if some kid in Hoboken found a way to still get the internet for free. So instead of stealing comics/music/whatever from the net, we could just steal the net Jesse James style ;)

They cant stop free internet, they can only hope to contain it.

I'm a little confused, because in Australia, I think that's what we have. We have plans that give us a limit on how much we can download each month.

I also read that in Time magazine, and if I'm reading it right, I don't find it to be that bad. Sometimes limiting, but not totally horrible. But maybe that's because I've been introduced to that ever since I got the Internet, so it doesn't really bother me at all.

From what I've heard, the rate they want to charge for is tied to bandwidth. With so much video online even casual users are using a lot more bandwidth than we used to, and the companies want to charge more because of that. The biggest impact will probably be that people feel a lot less free to watch video or use other services online that require downloading.

Ohhh! Is this about net neutrality?
#44 Posted by Leroy (128 posts) - - Show Bio

I think it's kind of about that, but it's not going to be the end of net neutrality. This is how they're going to charge us for bandwidth. The way they charge other sites for taking us away from their sites is a whole other complaint.
