Hello people, I had a small argument with my friend about the movie Titanic and I'd just like to see what other people feel about the debate.
Ok, so at the end of Titanic, Jack and Rose make it out of the ship, and they get to a floating piece of wall in the freezing water. Rose gets on top of the wall, and she's hanging onto Jack. The wall can only support one person. Now Rose can either let go of Jack and get to safety, or stay with him and die together. In the movie, she ends up letting go.
Now my question is: Was Rose a bad person for doing this?
My friend is convinced that Rose should've died with Jack and by "letting him die" she pretty much murdered him. I say that she did the right thing because a) he was screwed anyway and b) killing herself would've been extremely foolish and would not have made a good ending.
Your thoughts?
A debate about the movie Titanic.
she did the right thing
thats what Jack wanted,he knew he was screwed anyway,so he wanted that ,at least, Rose could live
Rose choicing to die would be the selfish choice, not only she would negate Jack's last wish, she would be using death as a way to not mourn over Jack's death
I've debated before about the possibility that that piece of floating debris could have still possibly held them both above water, but Jack himself requested that she live on, because at that point Jack had to have already known he was going through hypothermia and extreme frostbite. Seeing as how long it took for the rescue boat to even try to go and search for survivors (in actual history, people have condemned some of the officers on the boats for refusing to go look for survivors), Jack would most likely have already succumbed to the hypothermia and probably would still have died.
I think Rose did the right thing, as painful as it was to watch.

Rose did not murder him. I'm pretty sure he was already dead for a long time in the water, like practically everyone else. So of course she's going to try and save herself. It's what Jack would have wanted. It would dishonor him had she not tried to live.
<3 Titanic!
I don't think she was bad. She was respecting Jack's "last wishes". I'm sure he wasn't planning on dying (even though he probably knew it was likely), but he wanted her to be safe even if he did. And the only reason she let go of him was because he was dead. Holding onto a dead body wasn't exactly going to "prove her love". He asked for her to find a way to live and she did....because she loved him!
Goodness...people just have to make these good movies so complicated in meaning...
