Here Is An Answer From Yahoo:

"I am your college professor that you requested, with a doctorate in Mathematics. I will break this down as simply as possible and end this debate as approx. 10 students have already asked me this today.

The problem as it is written is 6÷2(1+2) , the ÷ cannot be substituted with a fraction bar because they have different ranks on the order of operations. It is an illegal math move to do this. The bar ranks with parentheses, ÷ is interchangeable with *. therefore the problem must be solved as 6÷2(1+2) NOT 6 (over) 2(1+2) we do the parentheses first, so 6÷2(3), the parentheses are now no longer relevant, because the number inside is in it's simplest form. Every single number has implied parentheses around it.
6÷2(3)
(6) ÷(2)(3)
6÷2*3,
or even converting the division to multiplication by a reciprocal (a legal math move)
(6)(1 (over) 2)(3)
are all correct ways to write this problem and mean exactly the same thing. Using pemdas, where md and as are interchangeable, we work from left to right, so (3)(3) or
3*3= 9

Just because something is implied rather than written does not give it any special rank in the order of operations.

The problem in it's simplest form, with nothing implied would look like this:
(1+1+1+1+1+1 (over) 1) ÷ (1+1 (over) 1) * ((1(over) 1) + (1+1 (over) 1))
From here, nothing is implied, This again, works out to 9.

If the symbol '/' was used this whole debate would be ambiguous since that symbol can mean "to divide by" or it could mean a fraction bar.

HOWEVER, because the ÷ symbol is used, it can not be changed to mean a fraction bar because that would change the order of operations and thus the whole problem, you can't change a symbol to mean something because you want to, in doing so you are changing the problem.

Once and for all, the answer is 9.

Hopefully some of my students see this so I can stop answering this question.

End of debate... hopefully.

Can We Finish This Already..... :(

Google It.

The 1st Google answer is 1.

Yeah, and you instantly get people arguing whether it is 9 or 1 when you click on it.

This is why I love math :) But it really does not matter to me that much since I would just get 9 as the correct answer on a test.

By the way, welcome to the Vine. You were the first to post a somewhat objective view on the thread. I will definitely be interested in seeing your views on the Off-topic forum. It can get pretty messy here.....

This is not hard. you do parenthesis. then multiplication. then division. The answer is 1.

that's all there is to it.There is a certain order that you do things.....this was taught in 6th grade

Paranthesis

Exponents

Multiplication

Division

Addition

Subtraction

Although, there is still a possibility that I,and these people can be wrong. But I distinctly remember being taught things like this.

No, multiplication and division (and likewise addition and subtraction) can be substituted. It's not "PEMDAS" it's more "PE(M OR D)(A OR S). Multiplication and division both have the same value, and can be swapped. If multiplication comes first in the equation, then you do multiplication first. If division comes first in the equation, then you do division first.

In this case, "6/2" comes before 2(1+2), so you divide 6 by 2, then multiply it by 3.

Seriously guys, this is like, Elementary level math...

@ImmortalOne: If a number is still in parenthesis you have to deal with that first. You have to use the distributive property. Parenthesis means you distribute the number outside the parenthesis to the number inside the parenthesis. that function comes BEFORE the division.

Parenthesis comes first, yes, but that'd just be "1+2". So it'd end up looking like 6/2(3). And no, I'm pretty sure parenthesis doesn't mean you have to multiply the outside number before the rest of the equation. 2(3) is just 2 x 3, not some other rule which says you have to multiply the parenthesis first.

I think every country is taught differently.

6/2(1+2) =

6/2x(1+2) =

One half would think of them the same, the other half won't.

Math is universal. Didn't Mean Girls teach you anything?

The real problem is that if you try to solve the equation as it is written in the thread topic, there's an ambiguity which does not exist in the version of the equation actually written in the OP. This point was raised by the quoted math Dr. as well. The topic suggests 6 over (2*(1+2)), but the written equation makes it clear that the six is to be divided by 2 and then multiplied by 3.

Anyone who believes the answer to be 1 (or any number other than 9) is simply doing incorrect math, though with the thread topic that's understandable.
