Apparently there are a lot of really bright, fit, athletic people on this page that seem to know it all. However, can you riddle me this simple equation?

I want to see how smart some of you make yourselves out to be. Have fun. I have my popcorn ready. :)

@pooty: Nah it doesn't work like that.

6/2(1+2)

(1+2) = 3

6/2 = 3

3(3) = 9

It's a general rule of thumb that if an equation has no specific sign that it is a multiplication.

So its basically 3x3.

actually it's the division then the multiplication... remember multiplication and division are equal... so you go from left to right after the parenthesis...

6/2 ( 1+2 )
6/2 ( 3 )
now you go from left to right

3 ( 3 )

9

That is a bullsh*t code because there is no way Picard would remember that. I don't care how smart he was, unless of course he had a photo graphic memory, but that's never been shown. And why the hell does Data know Picards security code.

Now this is a real code:

@kingSaturn: normally you would go left to right but you get rid of the parenthesis first by multiplying.

It's really simple...

First, the parenthesis (1+2)=3

Then, you just go from left to right, because division and multiplication can be swapped.

6/2=3

3(3)=9

No, division and multiplication (or addition and subtraction) can be swapped. If division comes first in the equation, then you do division first, or vice versa.

The only reason that multiplication (and addition) came first in PEMDAS was that they couldn't do PE(M/D)(A/S).

PEMDAS is something you should know by 3rd grade....at the latest...

Left to right in this order

  1. Parenthesis
  2. Exponents
  3. Multiple and Divide
  4. Add and Subtract

So, 1+2 is 3.

6/2 is 3

So no we have 3*3 which is 9

The answer is 9.

Thanks for reading,

Now this is a real code:

That's not Picard's password that Data was saying. That is what Data was changing the password too.... To stop anyone from having any sort of chance to regain control of the ship. It's a commonly misinterpreted part of the series.

You do the parenthesis first, then the division, and you get 3 (3), in which you then multiply.

once you add the numbers in the parenthesis... there are no operations to do in the parenthesis... you do the division next and then you do 3(3) as 3x3

Although, there is still a possibility that I,and these people can be wrong. But I distinctly remember being taught things like this.
