Now that everyone has talked about this year's comic book movies, let's talk about all of this year's movies. Well, the goods ones, that is. Take some time to reflect on what you loved and, when you're ready, list your top 5. You can post up to 5 honorables as well.

(Movies I still need to see: Birdman,Nightcrawler,Interstellar, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies)

  1. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  2. The Raid 2
  3. Gone Girl
  4. X-Men: Days of Future Past
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy

Honorable mentions: Edge of Tomorrow, How to Train Your Dragon 2, John Wick, Big Hero 6, Snowpiercer (2014 in the U.S.)

Oh, and I didn't see a thread for this already. If one already exists, let me know and I'll warn myself and then lock this silly thread.

5. Dracula: Untold (5/10

The reason i put Dracula so far behind is because there was barely any magic and he didn't show off much of his powers

Honestly, the majority films I've seen this year were comic-based. I need to expand my horizon!

Forgot to add Fury to the list of movies I haven't seen yet! Really want to check it out since Ayer is directing Suicide Squad and it's the latest example of his work.

@k4tzm4n: @monsterstomp: Didn't see ASM 2 and Dawn of the Planet Apes, are they any good?

You'll get mixed responses about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Personally, I liked it a good deal. The chemistry between Peter and Gwen is terrific and there's a ton of silly fun and heart. The story is really generic and the villains aren't the best around, but if you just want to enjoy some popcorn fun, you should have a decent or even good time. It's familiar but fun, I'd say. Tons of flaws, sure, but for me, the good made up for the bad. As for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, I think it's brilliant. Stunning visuals, great characters, a smart script, and just the right amount of crazy, jaw-dropping action. Did you see Rise of the Planet of the Apes?

Oh, I didn't know that.

Now I have high hopes for Suicide Squad! Fury was a blast and is a 'must see' film, in my honest opinion.

@monsterstomp: Didn't see ASM 2 and Dawn of the Planet Apes, are they any good?

I really enjoyed TASM 2. There is a lot of awesome action, I particularly like the well placed slo-motion scenes and music score. Garfield and Stone have this on-screen chemistry that I've never seen before. The story is a little long and there are a million things going on at the same time, which is its downfall. I wouldn't say its as good as the first, but its still awesome.

Dawn was a nice carry on from the first film. The characters get more depth, the story will keep you awake and hooked, but the action is off the charts. So damn intense.

Jokes. I don't even think the movie was in cinemas in Australia. Just came out on DvD this year... What's up with that? I think you'd really enjoy Fury though.

Part of me is "over" war movies because they go for "realism" and the public thinks it's realistic...but it really isn't. Black Hawk Down is the most realistic movie I've seen compared to my own experiences at war.

Lone Survivor is good, but definitely "Hollywooded" up. So was the Hurt Locker (man the EOD guys HATE that movie). Fury looked like it was from the trailer, but I still want to see it. American Sniper I'll have to see as well, but so far it looks like it's going for closer to the Black Hawk Down vibe. I certainly want to see Unbroken, but that isn't what I'd call a "war movie".

After that, I think I need a break from them.

I haven't seen Black Hawk Down, and I can see how Lone Survivor would have been hollywooded up, but man those action scenes had a lot of intensity. I've seen plenty of helmet-camera footage of real life battles (can't say for certain how real they are), but Lone Survivor was almost smack bang on point with the sound and pacing, I think.

American Sniper looks freaking awesome and I'd love it if it was realistic. They say Cooper is playing as one of America's best snipers, so it'd be interesting to see what these guys are actually capable of. I've been feening for another sniper flick since Shooter.

@monsterstomp: Being a sniper isn't glorious like they show it in Shooter or most other films. There's a certain weight and toll on the sniper as you aren't fighting for your life in the heat of combat. It isn't self defense, you are picking off an enemy/threat that doesn't even know you're there.

Killing someone in battle can be hard to accept when it's over. Killing someone who never knew you were there, who may not pose an immediate threat, is a different level of hard. It's one of the reasons I never looked at getting sniper qualified.

As for Lone Survivor, some of the slow-mo explosions made it feel more like a typical action flick then war film, and the ending is entirely made up. I prefer films to show 100% the struggles and obstacles men and women overcome in war...win, lose, or draw.

@granitesoldier: I know your views on snipers and can understand completely. I even agree with them on a realistic point of view. If I was a soldier, I'd probably be on the frontline too. None of it is glorious, I'd imagine.

However, when talking about films (leaving realism out of the picture), I kind of prefer sniper action to frontline action. The amount of uncanny shots I've seen in sniper flicks just makes me nod my head in awe. Unless its like Billy from The Expendables 2... that's taking it too far. Lol.

There's a short book called "Shaping the World from the Shadows" that cronicles what little can be liked to CAG in the past few brushfire wars.

Two CAG snipers saved a group of Marines in Fallujah by shooting enemies that were under good cover by actually ricochetting bullets. Not like Deadshot stuff obviously, but for real banking shots.

Snipers become so in-tune with their rifles that it becomes an extension of themselves. They understand the physics of the rounds perfectly and pull off incredible feats of marksmanship.

Best, in no order:

Gone Girl

Fury

Nightcrawler

X-Men: Days of Future Past

The Judge

Still need to see: Boyhood, Foxcatcher, A Most Wanted Man, Birdman, American Sniper

Worst, in no order:

Lucy

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Other Woman

I, Frankenstein

(But if I had to pick the two worst, they'd be Lucy and I, Frankenstein; those were the only two movies that I walked out of because I realized halfway through that I didn't really care how they ended)

2. Hobbit: Battle of the five armies

Doesn't come out until Boxing Day here. Or the day after Christmas (not sure if 'Boxing Day' is exclusive to Australia, its probably called something different where you at). How was it? Is the bow action from Legolas and Tauriel still as awesome as it was in Desolation of Smaug?

I don't think it's really fair for me to make a list, because of the five films I've seen so far that were released this year, only two weren't comic book movies. >.<

And I still need to see both Interstellar and Big Hero Six.

Not sure how I'd put them in a top 5, but Interstellar was definitely my favorite.
