So, I was reading one of my old Batgirl comic books--you know, from that magical time when Cassandra Cain had her own title?--and I was thinking of other characters that could support Black Bat if she got her own title back. I came up with two other forgotten characters, and created my own little imaginary team of crime fighters.
The first character and leader of the team is, obviously, Cassandra Cain. Her ability to read body language makes her the perfect one to lead what's going on and who should take care of what, and her personal connections to David Cain, Marque Cain, Mad Dog and Lady Shiva give her unique knowledge of criminals. I believe that following her professional life as a crime fighter and her personal life as the daughter of David Cain, Lady Shiva and, in essence, Bruce Wayne would be appealing to most Cassandra fans. The second person I placed on this team, one of Cassandra's supporting characters, was Damien Wayne, forgotten when one of his mother's men killed him in Batman Incorporated, issue 8. [Oh, and that's the other thing. The League of Assassins can revive a complete stranger such as Jason Todd in the Lazarus Pit, but their leader and her son are on their own? Yes, I read the comic which ended with the graves dug up, but the Batman Depression Saga tells us they're gone for good, doesn't it?] Because of how similar his childhood is to Cassandra's, I think they would make an awesome team since Cass kind of knows why he acts the way he does while everyone else just saw him as a brat most of the time. I know that Damien was pampered as the son of Talia Al Ghoul, but he went through a lot of the same hardships as Cassandra went through as a child. And, I would have liked to see his growing respect for life further pushed by the influence of Cass and her beliefs. The last supporting character I included in this team wasn't really forgotten, but more exiled from the bat-family. Jason Todd, "Red Hood." I know that he technically has his own series, "Red Hood and the Outlaws," but he rarely appears in the Batman comic books anymore, with the exception of the Death of the Family saga. I would love to see his methods of killing "criminal scum" paired with Cass and Damien's huge respect for life. Every crime fighting team needs a little conflict to make things interesting, right? Besides, Jason and Damien are both so talented at ticking people off that I could see a growing respect for one another through trading insults. However, that "little" incident when Jason slept with Damien's mother may make things a little awkward. And how would Damien react when he discovered Cassandra killed his maternal aunt, Nyssa Al Ghoul? I think that would raise the hostility levels amongst the group, but like I said, every crime fighting group needs a little conflict here and there, right? As far as Jason and Cassandra, I think that together they would have much needed knowledge of the criminal world. Think about it: Cassandra has connections to some of the most notorious criminal masterminds in the world, and Jason's had experience as a criminal. With this inside knowledge, they could get to the criminals faster than Batman and be a little rougher without killing the criminals. I think that with the rougher methods of the three forgotten characters, Gotham would get clean a lot faster than with Batman's "no more harm than necessary" policy. Now, I'm not saying that they should go about killing "criminal scum", but they could be a little rougher than Batman, at least. Anyways, that's my imaginary team of forgotten characters. If anyone has another forgotten character from DC that would fit on this team, let me know and I'll write them into the next one of these I do.
