Josh Boone to Direct "The New Mutants" at Fox

Another group of mutant heroes from the Marvel universe is getting their own movie at Fox. According to Deadline, The Fault in Our Stars director, Josh Boone, will be co-writing and directing The New Mutants, which will expand the X-Men cinematic universe. Writing alongside Boone is Knate Gwaltney, which Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.

Boone is currently working on an Anne Rice vampire film for Universal and The Stand to follow that. It seems we're still a few years away from seeing this team on the big screen. However, Kinberg is very excited about the project and about Boone being attached:

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

The New Mutants made their first appearance in 1982 in MARVEL GRAPHIC NOVEL #4 and delivered the origin story of the young mutants learning to use their new powers. The team was originally created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod and debuted the characters Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Moonstar, Karma, and Sunspot. The series was actually where Deadpool originated from, which is currently being filmed starring Ryan Reynolds.

I'd love for them to do the original new mutants.

I would applaud this......but I feel as if Fox may treat it as "Twilight" with X-Men in it.

Also, there is no way Fox is going to have characters like Magik and Warlock or explore Dani Moonstars mystical connections. Which kind of takes the fun, sci fi, fantasy elements that the New Mutants were well known for away from the it.

Really hoping Magik is in this. And not just pushed to the side like her brother has been.

@amazingwebhead: I'm less concerned how they represent his powers and just hopeful that he gets some lines. Also, it would be kind of cool if this franchise crossed over with Deadpool.

How about we start out with the original five, and work our way out from there in the sequels? I know actually adapting the source material is kind of a revolutionary concept, but there's no reason not to try.

Oh, who am I kidding? Go ahead and figure out a way to include Wolverine on the team. You know you want to.

If they can make this Movie and NOT have the Story in some way tie to Wolverine, I'll be amazed. Cause' that Guy is like the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon". :)

As much as I'd like to believe they'll stick to the original lineup....I hiiiiighly doubt they will. Are they spinning directly out of X-Men: Apocalypse? Sunspot was already a member of the future X-Men...although since we're getting Archangel in the movies over a decade before his appearance in X3 that point could be moot, BUT having Jubilee the same age as Jean, Scott and Storm makes me believe that we're not gonna get anything that lines up directly with the comics as we've already come to expect these days.

I can see some Generation Xers and Young X-Men getting filtered into the mix.

New Mutants (up until Liefeld destroyed it) is my favorite all-time book. So I won't be able to stop myself from watching this. And it is going to suck (for me) because I have already seen the whole movie in my imagination. Maybe I will get hit by a bus and die before it opens so I won't feel compelled to watch it. A boy can dream, can't he?

When First Class came out, I had this awesome idea that each film could represent a particular era of X-men and be set in that decade as a period piece.

60s- First Class

70s- Giant Sized X-Men lineup

80s- New Mutants

90s- X-Force

00s- X-Factor detective era

Well a New Mutants movie is great in all but what I want to know is how they'll make it all about Wolverine (or maybe even Xavier/Magneto) and still call it an "X-Men" (or in in this case "New Mutants") movie

I think it will be a mix of the New Mutants and some of the X-Men that were students in the movies. We may see Rogue, Kitty and Iceman in this as well as some of the New Mutants. I just want Magik to definitely be among the cast.

Wow. I'm surprised with all the positive feedback. I thought I'd see more people hating on Fox for not giving Marvel back the X-Men.

Anyway, I'm surprised this is a film. I heard a while back Fox was going to make an X-Men TV series. But this is even cooler. If Fox wants to get better in the competitive superhero film environment, they have to introduce more films other than X-Men. They can't use X-Men as an "Avengers" type team-up movie, because the X-Men members don't really have separate origins or have good solo films or good solo adventures (except Wolverine, I guess). Marvel made Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor into three different solo movies and then Avengers as a team-up. Fox (maybe) can use X-Men, New Mutants, and other X-Teams (I'm pretty sure there are more) as "solo" films, and then maybe make a really big team-up film? I don't know, I'm no expert.

I hope they introduce CABLE!!!
