Seriously, I don't understand! Nolan trilogy has shown that realistic stories are more loved than superheroes with powers and Frank Castle is the more realistic character of the comics. So, what's the problem?
Why is it so hard to make a good Punisher movie?
Because Batman movies are dominating and to the general public it would feel way to similar to the Dark Knight trilogy
@kidphillip: But a Punisher movie can be more like a Tarantino movie
@the_stegman: Thank you! Underated classic.
Beata
Because the studio executives keep putting the punisher in the hands of people who have no business making movies.
Has the op not seen the 2004 version? It was the Dark Knight before the Dark Knight was the Dark Knight
I loved Tom Jane's Punisher...like, a lot.
They just haven't managed to get the right formula. Look at the awful Schumacher films. Happens to all good characters. In my opinion, they haven't gotten the right actor for Frank Castle. Me personally, I would think it would be relatively easy to make a good Punisher film. His origin is just as poignant, if not more so, than Batman's. I've seen all three Punisher films and while I didn't think they were good, they had good aspects. War Zone had a great skull logo, the Jane version had the right look for the character, and the '89 version had the darkest tone, especially in the alternate ending.
A few things...
- He has to be rated R to pull off. You lose a lot of comic book fans right there.
- His mentality is cold, calculated and merciless. That doesn't make him appealing or sympathetic to most.
- He kills his enemies. So there is generally no great nemesis for him to face.
I agree with @cuddlebear. Dredd has convinced me it can be done right. But after three films, people will have zero to little patience with something half arsed. So if they do it, do it right. If it were me, I'd focus on Punisher: Born. Make a Vietnam era film. I'd follow the recipe for Dredd when it comes to gore and violence.
@moul: He's not a superhero and he is ultra violent so that makes it hard to market him movie wise.
people who read comic books "get" him but the mainstream doesn't obviously.
I loved Tom Jane's Punisher...like, a lot.
Absolutely :)
I think its a case of over thinking things. Keep it simple stupid. The Punisher kills people...that's it. Make that into movie.
Punisher belongs on Netflix with Daredevil and the Defenders.
