Screw it. You know what? I'm just going to do it!!!!!
I'm a DC nut. I grew up on Bruce Timm's DCAU. After seeing TDK in '08, I was suddenly reminded of why I love superheroes. I re-watched the entire DCAU from beginning to end, in the proper order. When I was done, I started on the comics.
I read Crisis on Infinite Earths-->Infinite Crisis-->52. After that, I read various elseworlds and stand alone stories including Kingdom Come, Superman: Red son, Batman: Hush, Superman: For All Seasons...... etc.
When I got tired of these, I read Geoff John's entire run on GL. I am now reading Morrison's run on Batman, as well as Gaiman's fantastic run on The Sandman.
On my birthday this year, I received a yearlong subscription to 2 DC titles as a gift. I chose GL and Action Comics. I am now up to date on GL (thanks to the backissues at my LCS), and I have been following Paul Cornell's run on Action.
When I heard about Flashpoint, I had one of my 'screw it' moments, and I decided to finally make the transition to buying floppies. I have been following Flashpoint, as well as all the tie ins. Now with the New DCU on the horizon, I will be buying more comics than ever before.
Today, I had another 'screw it' moment.
Seeing as though I'm going to blow 80% of my monthly spending money on comics anyway, I figure I might as well seal the deal, and invest ALL of it in comics!!
So which extra titles will I choose? Well, I haven't decided yet!
That's where you come in. :)
What are Marvel's 5 best titles right now?
After Fear Itself wraps up, I jump in without any consideration for backstory, continuity, or anything else :)
Marvel's best ongoing series??
amazing spider-man (Big Time)
invincible iron man (start at 500 which would leave you only 7 issues behind I think)
The Mighty Thor (only 4 issues in)
Captain America(only 2 issues in)
Daredevil ( only 2 issues in)
Uncanny X-Force
Amazing Spiderman
FF (F4)
X-Factor
Thunderbolts
I'd tell you to follow Punisher, but it reset; or the X-men main titles, but they're resetting soon, or Avengers... but they're getting post-event shakeups, or even Incredible Hulk, but it's getting reset.
Note these resets are not reboots, but different writers = ???
Journey into Mystery has been solid too, with young loki... but who knows how long that will last.
1. PunisherMAX (far and away the best ongoing title Marvel publishes)
2. Captain America
3. Captain America & Bucky
4. Invincible Iron Man
5. Daredevil
(in no particular order)
1. Daredevil- the first two issues feel like all the best parts of an old comic book
2. Uncanny X-Force- Is a wonderful black ops book in which you don't need to know much if anything at all about the other x books
3. Captain America- Ed Brubaker is a wonderful writer and has done some incredible cap stories over the last couple years
4. X-23- It's a simple character driven book with some fun stories, not the most glamorous book but definitely worth spending 3 bucks on
5. JMS's Thor run- This is from the old thor run before it turned into the mighty thor. I personally think that it's much better than the current mighty thor issues. it's collected in three trade paperbacks and if you ever want to read some great thor stories check that out
Daredevil and Journey into Mystery are what are most exciting to me right now.
The Avengers: Children's Crusade has sucked me in, although its a limited series and close to done.
Black Panther has been good, but probably won't last.
I'm looking forward to the new Ultimate Spider-Man which I think comes out next month.
I'm from the opposite end of the spectrum - I've grown up on Marvel all my life and have just recently gotten into DC. I'm really enjoying Flashpoint at the moment and I'm eagerly anticipating the New 52.
To answer your question, I'm really enjoying The Mighty Thor. It's a great book all around with fantastic art and a good story.
Just a tiny SPOILER, to entice you: ***it involves Asgard & Galactus.***
I'm also reading the Uncanny X-Force which is on issue 17 I believe, so you'd want to pick up the first two TPB. They're about $13 each on Amazon. (:
I've also really been enjoying Venom & Future Foundation; which are both still haven't reached issue 10. Venom has a TPB already too.
If you're just getting in to DC, do yourself a favor and pick up Geoff John's run on GL (if you haven't already done so)!
PM me for details on where to start and order. I'll reciprocate your kind gesture, and give you a spoiler:
***it involves zombies. lots and lots of zombies***
They aren't doing the best on goings they put out in Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, but I have heard nothing but good things for the Future Foundation.
Marvel must have(in my opinion)
The amazing spider-man
Ironman
thor
The avengers (both 'new' and normal)
incredible hulk
wolverine
x-force
x-men
The punisher (only one issue out now)
if uou can only buy one or two then get spider-man, or new avengers
I was baffled by all the love for Captain America until I saw this was a three year old thread that had been resurected. Makes sense now. I'm actually glad it was necroed because I've never had a harder time finding Marvel comics I want to read. Black Widow, yes. I'm enjoying that one, but....
It strikes me that this was a particularly bad time to return to Marvel comics, lol.
Maybe it's because I never read the Ultimate comics. Maybe I don't see the big picture, but I'm looking at the list of titles for march and may and I'm not seeing a lot that interests me, particularly in the new titles.
The new Hawkeye title, yes. Avengers 42 and 43, yes. New Avengers, yes.... I see some x-men and guardians of the galaxy that might be interesting. I'm wondering if I should start reading Shield... Thor...more amusing than I thought it would be.... I'm reading Bucky Barnes: the winter soldier in hopes it gets better, not because I like it.
The rest, I just have no idea. I don't understand the continuity or the context, so it seems entirely wtf. Is it just me or it Battleworlld just a giant 'what if' that got pulled out of thin air? And why is Cap hanging out with Devil Dinosaur, lol? I haz confusion....
