More casting news is coming out of the Supergirl camp as Necessary Roughness actor Mehcad Brooks has been cast as Jimmy Olsen. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about the newest addition to the growing cast of the show and they said this about Olsen's role in the upcoming television series:

Olsen, in the CBS take, is a photographer at CatCo.,
where Kara works. He's the
salt of the earth and this only makes Kara crush on him even more. The character has recently been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret. But with Kara emerging as Supergirl they grow closer.

Brooks was also on HBO's True Blood and ABC's Desperate Housewives as well. He will be starring opposite Glee's Melissa Benoist and the pilot is expected to his later in 2015.

No idea who that is. I'm sure he'll do fine, I just wonder if they're going to keep his character intact, or if he'll only be Jimmy by name.

CAT GRANT | The project is eyeing females in their 40s, open ethnicity, to play the founder of CatCo, a media conglomerate that Cat built from the ground up. Kara (Supergirl’s mild-mannered alter ego) will work as a personal assistant to Cat, who is described as “J.Lo by way of Anna Wintour.”

JAMES OLSEN | In his late 20s/early 30s, open ethnicity, James is a smart, worldly and (duh) attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.

WINSLOW ‘WYNN’ SCHOTT | This twentysomething tech whiz/Comic-Con stalwart toils for CatCo as a programmer, unaware of his own (toying?) potential. Unware of her secret, he carries a torch for Kara, whom he lives next door to.

HANK HENSHAW | As an upstart CIA agent, Hank grew obsessed with intergalactic intel. Now in his 40s and lording over the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations), he is on high alert when Supergirl reveals herself, worried that her otherworldly abilities pose a threat to humankind.

I actually wanted him as Luke cage, haha.

Wait a second. A blonde DC superhero. Cast a brown-haired Glee actor in main part. Racebend potential love interest from redhead to African American. What show am I talking about?

Granted, the only show I have seen this guy in was Desperate Housewives and he was a straight faced, monotone, super boring dude...I've not seen anything else with him in it. Maybe he improved? Lets hope so...otherwise, it's going to be super painful every time he's on screen.

Can't wait for white T'Challa, Asian Hatemonger and female Darksied.

Nobody is going to watch this just because of a black Jimmy Olsen so just keep it the way it's been for 75 years. And if a white male played T'Challa I wouldn't go see it.

Why the heck do they have to change character's races almost every time?!

But I'm fine with the cast choice this time. Jimmy Olsen isn't that big of a character so a race change doesn't really matter IMO.

I'm okay with Jimmy being black but Jimmy is supposed to be scrawny and awkward, I've seen this guy in other things and while he isn't exactly a body builder he is neither scrawny or awkward.

They don't need to get black guys for white guys...

I am all up for diversity and all that but sometimes, it gets annoying...

Then again, it's Jimmy Olsen not Lex Luthor...

Actually the idea of the show is that they're just rebooting Smallville with a female lead character. HER STEP-SISTER IS EVEN CALLED aLEXander!

I can understand if they cast him based on his performance (if he, as an actor, just really hit the right marks for them) but if its because of some diversity quota; (1) Make a new character (like for example Chloe was an original creation) or (2) use a black character from the comics instead of doing this. Overall this is expected with superhero adaptations so it doesn't bother me much.

Kind of sick of all these characters becoming black when asians and latinos barely appear in comics.

I haven't seen anything from this guy so I'll wait for the pilot if he's suited for the role.

I'm actually starting to get a little sick of companies changing their characters altogether like this. It's a pretty easy way of confusing new fans who are interested in finding more about the character by reading/watching older material with their most popular and frequent depictions. But it's not just that; I don't know if it's just me or not, but completely rewriting an old character into something "new" and "modern" in order to adjust to a more modernized, civil way of thinking strikes me as just lazy. If you're thinking of adding new, more modern characters or elements to the DC, or Marvel Universe (because, let's be honest, these are the main two offenders), why not just create new characters altogether? Creates new horizons to explore with new foundations to support your ideas. That said, since they seem dead-set on going down this route, the most that can be done by the fans is just watch the show unfold, and hope the show lives up to its potential.

Because people still want to like these characters, but want to be able to see them in a contemporary light. I actually think, done right, modernizing a character can be a challenging, but rewarding thing. Not saying it's always done right, but it can be.

It´s sad that there are more comments on the ethnicity of a fictional character than on an actual trailer of a real upcoming film.

He looks a little buff to be Olsen but it doesn't matter that much. And race doesn't matter with Olsen like it does with other characters, so this is pretty cool actually.

I second this. Latinos are the biggest minority group, yet they're WAY underrepresented in media compared to blacks.

Because of muh diversity! And remember that we also need a black love interest for the white woman! That's +80 social justice points right there!

I was being facetious, but the vast majority of comics characters are white and have been since the advent of the medium. With changing demographics in America, it's simply a necessity to stay relevant.

It really isn't.

Movies with all-white casts still make tons of money domestically and internationally. Diversity quotas really have almost zero effect on a movie or show's success.

For now, yes, but statistics and marketing studies are showing that eventually that won't be the case. This isn't diversity quota, but simply trying to represent a part of the audience that may not normally feel included. A lot of people like to see something of themselves up on the screen, on the page, or in the game, and all-white casts can make someone feel left out. It's really just good business.

Frankly, I don't see what the problem is. It doesn't hurt you, and it also helps members of the audience not feel excluded.
