Rules and FAQ

These rules are the cornerstone of the Vine...

1. No Nudity

Simple rule, this is a child friendly site with young users. No porn or hentai allowed.

There is no middle ground on this rule, it is firm and steadfast. Breaking it will have the mod's coming down on you hard. if you have a picture and you're not sure about it, either use your common sense, or if you're lacking that then PM it to a Mod and ask them.

2. No Profanity

Again, there is no middle ground on this one... if you swear your post gets deleted, if you keep doing it after getting warned then the mods will come down on you.

If you must swear to get a point across, something I don't see the point of, use symbols to cover up a few letters.

$ = S

! = I

And so on, it's a form of 'leet' speak that has evolved onto most forums, it gets the message across to most people and keeps the swearing to a minimum.

3. Anything you post here is open to criticism.

Everyone has a right to post here and everyone has a right to their own opinion. But people have differing opinions on things and they have just as much right to post as you do. That's why this is a discussion forum. A suggestion: before posting, ask how someone could counter your argument and what you can say about it.

4. Don't use slurs against someone's (supposed) race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

Using terms that fall under these makes you seem especially ignorant, and well, boring... we've heard it all before so don't bother with it...

any abuse against other members of The Vine will get you a warning.

5. Adding to the Vine‘s Enclopedia, but not sure how

There's a lovely button at the top right hand side that says "Help" either click on that or follow this link, failing that, ask a Mod, we're always here to help.

6. No threatening people

This was brushed up above, don't threaten anyone... any threatening behavior or abuse will be met with a warning, three strikes and you’re out.

  • How do I become a Moderator?

You don't seek to become a mod, we seek you out...

  • How many warnings do I get before being banned?

3 warnings. There are special occasions where we'll skip the 3 warnings, but you've got to do something really bad for that to happen

  • I see a bug/problem in the wiki/forums. Where do I report it?

If you notice a bug, post it Here with a little explanation of what the bug is, where it happened and a HTML link if possible please.

  • How do I earn points?

Comic Vine uses a unique system for content submission that involves heavy moderation for new or anonymous users and gradually opens up more options to the individual user as they continue to submit quality data to the site. Most users can gain live edit access (where submission show up on the site immediately) within a week or two of submitting approved content. Until that time submissions go through a moderation queue that is monitored by the staff, or most likely, volunteer moderators from the community. We try to get to new submissions within 24 hours. You will receive a private message once your submission has been approved or rejected and a history of your submissions can be accessed at anytime from within your profile.

If you're looking for a page that really needs work then head over here and work on one that really needs info from people in the know...

Basically it's easy to get points here, do quality submissions and you get the points for them. simple as that.

For the people complaining that there 'isn't anything more to add to the site', take a look around, there are thousands of pages that need doing.... and you can see that there are pages upon pages of submissions to do that no one is bothering with yet...

For those complaining that their submission got rejected, it's probably for one of three reasons...

  1. You're plagiarizing another site... NOT ACCEPTABLE HERE
  2. The level of Spelling and Grammar was so atrocious that we couldn't actually fix it without taking the entire submission apart and rewriting it ourselves.
  3. The information was incorrect... adding "implant" powers to Powergirl or Lara Croft or the like doesn't make you funny, doesn't make you smart, it makes you look like a prat who is never going to get live edit privileges.

G-Man and the other staff have actually taken to rejecting submissions if the spelling is too bad on them, while normally we do go through the submission and try and correct everything we can, sometimes it's just too big a job...

It's getting to the point now where the submissions are getting to be a joke, people are taking the piss when it comes to spelling, grammar and layout. Some people are taking it too far as just adding and taking away powers as they see fit.

Let me put this straight, if you continually mess with the database content you WILL be put on a Wiki ban and you won't be able to edit any more pages, the points will mean nothing to you.

Now that we've got that out of the way here's a few hints for the serious submitters out there that will help them work on site content and have their submissions approved quickly and easily...

Spell check your submissions

I can't stress this enough, so many submissions we get are complete nonsense because people don't read through the submission first and it's riddled with stupid mistakes and terrible spelling.

If you don't have a spell check or don't want to read through your submissions first, go and download Firefox, it will automatically check your spelling as you type and has an excellent spell checker built in.

Grammar

Capital letters for the start of sentences, capital letters for names, capital "I's", basic grammar here people...

Use paragraphs properly, space out your submissions so the character page is pleasant to read as well as informative.

Here are some websites to help with submissions.

I know quite a few of the major submitters on the site actually use Office based software to write out their submissions before copying them into the site, this is a brilliant idea as it lets you run through the spelling and grammar check off line and you can save a copy of it for later editing.

If you don't have expensive Office software like Microsoft Office, there are plenty of freeware variants about, one I can recommend is OpenOffice, which you can download for free here...

http://www.openoffice.org/

Basically just read through your submission once you've typed it out and if it makes sense to you and is in acceptable English, then and only then, click on the submit button.

And if you really want to get in the mods / admin's good graces, there is always room for people to help on Wednesdays / Thursdays when the new issues come out... as soon as you get the issue, scan in the cover and upload it as a 'new issue' with all the relevant details... It may not seem like a lot of points at first, but those 60 / 70 points per new issue soon mount up...

Say you do 6 issues a week, that's an average of 280 points extra per week for just helping keep the site updated with the new comics... add your other submissions on top of that and you're laughing. Another good way is to take a character that you collect regularly, anyone, and then every week (or whenever their new issue comes out), update their page with the new relevant information from the latest comic.

  • What are points for?

At the moment, nothing... they will be used for something at a later date, but at the moment they are just for a laugh.

If you have a complaint about a user...

if your complaint is about a user, either their actions on the forums or their submissions, follow these steps...

take a copy of the user name

grab a link of the posts / edits you are complaining about and send them both to a mod...

there are several mods you can send it to, if it's a forum problem then Methos, Kate Sith and Gambler will be happy to deal with it...

please bare in mind, this is not for petty squabbles or "he said, she said" crap... if you have a legitimate complaint, send it on...

If you have a complaint about a mod...

Now, this is a little more serious...

if you have a complaint against a mod then it needs to go to the forum admin, which is G-Man... so do the same as above, send a link of the mod you're complaining about, and a link to what has happened on the forums... copy both of these links and send a copy to Methos, Kate Sith and G-man using the multiple PM system

all comlaints will be dealt with in confidence and everything will be looked into...

Things that will help your complaint be dealt with asap...

Link to everything you are complaining about... if we don't know about it then we can't help you

if it's on the forum, don't 'attack' back... if they're attacking you simply copy the posts and PM it to us, don't attack back because then the complaint goes against both of you

if you make a complaint... don't wander off half way through talking to a mod / admin about it... it bugs us as we all have other stuff to do, complaints are important but we have a ton of other things to do and it doesn't help when people don't answer or just say 'oh it's sorted now, never mind'. if you've made a complaint, follow it through

M

With all that said, we hope you enjoy the site and if you do have any questions any of the Admin or Mod team will be happy to answer any of them.

Since a few people have PM'd and several of the other Mod's / Admin with regards to clarification of the rules, i have redrafted them to help clear up some of the problems...

THE RULES OF THIS SITE:

1) Drama, flamewars, controversies and other events occurring on other message boards are NOT to be discussed on here, take it to PM or msn... the entire Vine doesn’t need to know about your BS with another member..

2) Linking to personal sites such as your fan fiction page or LiveJournal is permitted within the normal course of a discussion. Please DO NOT create a thread just to advertise your personal site. Please DO NOT post in a thread just to advertise your personal site.

3) Anyone caught using our private message system or our userbase in order to harass other members will be banned without warning.

4) Absolutely no profanity or explicit sexual references are allowed.

5) All fanfic’s rated "R" or "NC-17" need to be posted in the adult only forums. Such subject matter includes graphic violence or whatever... if you’re unsure of your fic’s rating, PM it to Methos as a double check.

6) ComicVine follows the MPAA guidelines. If you're not sure about something, please check out these guidelines.

7) The following subjects are disallowed outright here in ALL FORUMS:

  • Incest - sexual situations between family members
  • Pedophilia - sexual situations between adults and minors
  • Pedo-erotica - sexual situations between characters under the age of 16, even if they are both consensual
  • Bestiality - sexual situations between humanoids and non-humanoids
  • Links to other sites that contain the above topics

8) Threats or insinuations of violence are NOT permitted. We do not allow threats or insinuations of violence directed at anyone, including the actors and production teams of the shows/movies discussed on these boards, as well as posters or moderators on this site..

9) Since there are members on this board from a wide range of backgrounds, all posters must refrain from making comments that could ordinarily be construed as sexist, homophobic, ethnocentric, racist, or significantly demeaning to any individual or group on the basis of disability, age, political inclinations or religion. What is construed as demeaning or hateful is up to the ultimate discretion of the moderators.

10) Discussion of downloading or any similar copyright infringing activity is strictly prohibited. Do not post any references to DOWNLOADING ANYTHING on this message board. This includes discussion of finding downloads, reading comics or watching episodes by downloading, software used for downloading or any sites that illegally stream copyrighted content. Any discussion of downloading will result in immediate closure of the infringing thread and a final warning issued to the user responsible.

The ONLY exception to this rule is "fan vids," which are derivative works, and links to them should only be available in the respective fan art sections.

11) DISCUSSION ON THIS BOARD SHOULD AT ALL TIMES BE ABOUT THE FORUM TOPIC AT HAND. To that end the following threads or discussions are strictly prohibited:

  • Threads or discussions designed solely to insult another group of fans, such as threads about why people like one character more than another
  • Insulting fans of a character, ship, or differing viewpoint, including couched insults hidden behind jokes, sarcasm, silly banter, or Emoticons
  • Psychoanalyzing other fans or posters views, which includes any remarks regarding another members frame of mind or sanity. At ABSOLUTELY NO time is it appropriate to tell another poster that they are in denial or delusional
  • Making generalizations regarding fandom as a whole without citing official sources (such as a poll or article)
  • Name calling and other similarly offensive remarks

12) If your post was edited by a Moderator, DO NOT re-edit out the moderator's remarks.

13) Leave the moderating to the actual Moderators. DO NOT attempt to "put another poster in his/her place." A gentle one-time reminder of the rules is fine, and we appreciate the spirit of this board where so many people rush to help newbies out. However, if there is a troll in the forums or a problem poster, we prefer that you notify a Moderator.

14) Please take all issues with a poster or moderator directly to PM. If you feel you need to discuss a matter with a particular moderator, please do so via PM. Please refrain from commenting (even agreeing) in a thread to a Moderator's warning as it does not add to the thread but to make it off topic. Any thread started ABOUT a moderator or complaining ABOUT Comic Vine itself will be immediately deleted and the poster immediately warned. If you have trouble with any particular moderator's decisions and private messaging them doesn't seem to work out the problem, use the complaints procedure.

15) Flamewars and insults are strictly prohibited. This board is for the discussion of anything about the comics we cover, whether it is positive or negative. Everyone has a right to their opinions, so please do not flame or insult any user, even if you disagree with their point of view. Statements such as "how can you all think this way" or "why does everybody hate" or "you're all just jealous" are prohibited.

16) At no point should anyone tell anyone else, "If you don't like it then stop reading." People are allowed to have their opinions, even if that opinion is that Superman, X-Men or any other comic is terrible.

17) This is an English-only board. All posts must be written in English. We do allow international threads in the Discussions forum, but we do not allow "international" threads to be in any language other than English, as that makes it impossible for us to moderate them as a group.

18) Trolling and Spamming the message board are not allowed.

19) All threads must meet the thread guidelines. Any thread not following these guidelines will be deleted and closed.

Your thread will be deleted if it meets any of the following criteria:

  • It has a really vague, irrelevant or egregiously misspelled subject line.
  • It starts with "I'm not sure this is the right forum in which to post this, but..." because chances are good that it's the wrong forum. Please ask a moderator where it belongs first.
  • It belongs in any of the subforums.
  • It is a duplicate of a thread we already have. Please use the forum search tool before posting any thread.
  • It is making a general commentary or merely venting, instead of initiating a discussion.

ComicVine Guidelines For Starting a New Thread:

  • Spell all names correctly in the subject line.
  • Do not put in punctuation marks in the subject line
  • Use proper spelling and capitalization in your posts.
  • Capitalize all proper nouns and at least the first word in the subject line
  • BE SURE that you post your thread in the proper forum or sub-forum.

20) NO FAN CAMP THREADS ALLOWED. A fan camp thread is when fans on the site set up a love or hate thread for a character or ship for the sole purpose of gathering like-minded fans, and by implication, the exclusion of differently-minded fans. This board is here to facilitate discussions, not setting up warring camps between fans. If you start a thread like this, it'll either be closed or renamed to a more neutral topic.

21) Please respect the personal lives of the writers, artists, editors and anyone else involved in the creation of the comics we are discussing. Because this forum discusses real human beings with real private lives PLEASE use judgment and respect in posting. In addition to abiding by all the regular site rules, please refrain from discussing the following topics regarding an actor’s:

  • Personal relationships
  • Family members
  • Personal contact information, such as home address and phone number, unless it is public knowledge already
  • Where you can meet an writer/artist (unless it's in official capacity such as a signing or a con)
  • How to best stalk an writer/artist
  • Blind items that you think might be about the writer/artist (s)
  • The personal lives of an writer/artist’s spouse or girl/boyfriend
  • Demeaning discussion regarding an writer/artist’s physical appearance and/or surgeries
  • Other types of rumor-mongering

FAN FICTION RULES

(1) You may post fanfic, fanfic challenges/ideas (if you don't like to write but want to see a certain story written), poems, songfics, comments about fanfic, round robins, and other fanfic related things.

(a) Post all fanfic in the fanfic forums.

(b) All fanfics should be rated G to PG-15

(c) SLASH IS ALLOWED. That means that you may come across stories here that have same-sex romantic relationships between characters. Anyone caught flaming (insulting) the author, people who enjoy such stories, or homosexuality in general will be warned and possibly banned.

(d) All characters in your story must be strictly fictional. Because the actors and production team of the show visit this board, for legal purposes we do not allow RPF (real-person fic) of ANY kind to be posted on this board. This includes inserting yourself, a real person, into the story.

(e)The following subjects are disallowed outright here on Comic Vine in ALL FORUMS:

  • Incest - sexual situations between family members
  • "Chan" or pedophilia - sexual situations between adults and minors
  • Pedo-erotica - sexual situations between characters under the age of 16, even if they are both consensual. This is still ILLEGAL to read in many countries, including Australia.
  • Bestiality - sexual situations between humanoids and non-humanoids.!
  • Links to other sites that contain the above topics.

(2) Be nice to each other. That means constructive criticism only. Criticize the work, not the author. Also keep in mind that there are different writing styles and levels here, as well as people who may not speak English as a first language. You are not required to be Shakespeare to post your work here.

(3) By posting fanfic here, you are saying that the fanfic (unless clearly noted) is WRITTEN BY YOU. If you are posting someone else's work you MUST have permission from the writer, and it must be noted in the body or subject line of the post.

(4)All stories should include as the first part of their first post the following template:

Title/Link:
Author:
Pairing: (if any)
Rating:
Warnings (if needed):
Spoilers (when applicable):
Short summary:

(5)The subject of each thread should AT LEAST include "Story Title (Rating)". It can include more details like "Story Title (Rating, angst, drama, crossover)" but the title and the rating should be first to make it easier for people to find your stories.

(6)All stories MUST be rated in the template and in the subject line of the post.

(7)All ratings must be appropriate to the story. We follow the MPAA guidelines for rating stories. If you're not sure how to rate your story, check out these guidelines. There are gray areas, but any story found to be rated grossly inappropriately will be removed and the user placed on warning.

(8)You can post either the actual text of the story, or a link to another site where your story is linked. There is one exception illustrated below.

(10)Do NOT link to a story on another message board. We'll allow links to any static archive or people's personal sites. If you need a place to host your stories, here are some suggestions in order of preference:

Wild Coyote (het fic archive) - (link)
The Smallville Slash Archive - (link)
The Level Three Archive (all ratings, pairings and genres) - (link)
FanFiction.Net (link)

Twisting The Hellmouth (link)
Any author's personal web site or story archive
Any author's personal blog or journal

Check with us first if you're not sure. It bears repeating: YOU MAY NOT LINK TO A STORY POSTED ON ANOTHER MESSAGE BOARD.

SOME SUGGESTIONS:

(1) If you want feedback, let the readers know what you want, ie grammar help, characterization, dialogue, etc. If you just want comments, say that too.

(2) Run your fanfic through spell check.

(3) Write your fanfic offline in a word-processing application. Save it. Copy the entire text (control + A). Open up a "New Message." Title in the Subject line. Control + V (Paste) in the Comment field.

(4) If you are posting your story in instalments, please post all your chapters to the same thread so latecomers don't have to hunt all over these boards for the earlier sections. There is an Edit function if you want to post the entire fic at the top of the thread as well.
