This is a thread for the CBMs you didn't have a lot of faith in, but you ended up liking/loving more than you thought you would. Kinda the opposite of @spider-manwins top 3 disappointing CBMs thread.

My top 3

1. Iron Man. I hate comic Tony Stark. I hate Tony so much that I refused to even watch the movie until they announced there was going to be an Avengers movie. After watching it for the first time though, it became one of my all time favorites.....I still hate comic Stark though.

2. Blade. I had no expectations for this movie at all. Prior to this movie my only exposure to Blade was from the 90s Spider-Man animated series and I was pretty underwhelmed by him in it.

3. X-Men. I had concerns about how the team dynamic would fit in a CBM back then....and they made it work. There are some issues with the movie, but overall it was solid. X-Men left a blueprint for all future team oriented CBMs to follow.

I knew Guardians would be good but I didn't expect it to be one of the MCUs best. So, Guardians.

AMS2 same as above but more so since I hated AMS.

I can't think of a third. Brb

The Wolverine - Thought the trailers looked awful, but I thought it turned out good.

Captain America: the Winter Soldier - After IM3 & Dark World I didn't have high expectations for any Marvel movies, but I watched this and thought it was pretty great. Shame Marvel couldn't keep up this quality with later movies.

Can't think of a third. I didn't expect Dark Knight Rises or Man of Steel to be anything great, but I turned out to love both of them, so I guess one of them.

Thor - I had no interest with the comic pretty much ever, so I had no expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be my favorite superhero flick that year.

Hellboy - I didn't like this movie the first time I saw it, but it was on a lot on cable so it started to grow on me to the point where I bought the blu-ray because I love it so much. It's just so much fun.

The Losers - I had never even heard of the comic, but this movie reminded me of the stupid, chaotic action movies of the 80's and early 90's. Reckless, over-the-top fun. Kind of like the latter Fast & Furious movies but without all the blah-blah-blah family.

3. Xmen first class - just had last stand and origins, so did not have high hopes, but it ended being great.

2. Man of Steel - had really high expectations, and then had a weird feeling it would end up badly, but also turned out good.

1. Dredd - I'm a judge dredd fan and figured it probably wouldn't be any good and end up like the Stallone flick. Ended being awesome to me and was surprised for sure.

1- Iron Man: I hate Tony Stark with a fiery passion, but really enjoyed the movie and RDJ as Tony.

2- The Spirit: This movie is HATED by pretty much everyone and I honestly found it very fitting and enjoyable (corny dialog, puns and all)

3- Dredd: I did not expect Karl Urban to be the badass that he was, and the movie was very good IMO. I was happy that they managed to potry Dredd in a good light and very surprised by this one.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy - I didn't expect anything and it wowed me.

2. V for Vendetta - I went to see it on the cinema because there was nothing else to watch. I ended up watching it 3 times.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy. I was hoping it would be good, but at the same time, I thought "with my luck, it's going to be terrible" (it wasn't).

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past. I went through a period where I didn't really like Singer's X-Men, but he completely redeemed himself in my eyes with it.

I can't think of a third.

  1. X-men: First Class - I had little expectations for all x-men movies after X-men 3 and Origins. I also didn't even like the first 2 as much as everyone else. This blew expectations out of the water.
  2. Kick-ass - the trailers were awful. In the end, simply put, it was awesome.
  3. Guardians of the Galaxy - Like most everyone else, I was dead sure that this was gonna be Marvel's first failure even though I liked the trailers. As soon as I saw the opening credits scene I knew I was completely wrong.

Iron Man, Both Cap America's. Sad thing is, the subsequent IM movies are on my most disappointing list.

Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The First Avenger were my least my least favourite phase one films, but I loved what the Russo brothers did with Cap 2. I knew nothing about the GOTG, but when I saw Rocket and Groot, I thought maybe Marvel were nuking the fridge. I'm glad I was proven wrong.

Why was The Dark Knight surprisingly good to you, considering the levels of hype it was receiving?

I meant to ask what was surprising about it being good to you since it was so hyped up before its release.

1. Batman Begins - First Batman film after Batman and Robin and I didn't know who Christian Bale and Chris Nolan were.

2. The Incredible Hulk - Wasn't expecting it to be much better than Hulk 2003 but it was better in every way.

3. Man of Steel

First Class - thought it was gonna focus too much on stupid teenagers, but Fassbender/McAvoy domianted.

Days of Future Past - very wary of time travel but it soooo worked.

Iron Man - I remember thinking "Really? Iron Man?"

I was tempted to put TDK. But not sure pleasantly surprising covers it. That movie blew my mind when I first saw it. Didn't know CBM could ever get so good.
