Essentially the arrival of the Beatles marked the beginning of rock and roll as we know it. Basically everything after them is "modern" music. However, there are some amazing classics that came before that.

My top two picks would probably be Stand By Me by Ben E. King, and Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison. I know there's people more schooled in this than I though, so I'd like to hear from you.

I was gonna say Sittin on the Dock of the Bay but it's actually late sixties.

EDIT: BTW I can't believe "You Got It" by Orbison came out in my lifetime haha

Edit: This should be in off topic.

Link Wray - Rumble. One of my favorite songs of all time.

Chuck Berry - Maybellene. The majority of his work while with Chess is great.

Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues. Thought it was The Who's song didn't you?

Dale Hawkins - Susie Q. Thought it was Credence Clearwater Revival's song didn't you?

Warren Smith - So Long I'm Gone. Rockabilly yeah!

Also, if we're not limiting to rock and roll then it becomes an endless list of jazz and blues musicians for me.
