Mary Sue arent an insult, several great characters start as mary sue and worked from there and became 3Dimensional characters.
Sadly people use terms and words as insults, so when people use them in the right way, people believe you are ducking punching their favorite things.
Some other became mary sue because some writers decide to go into this direction, making the character going into fan fic type insanity or going totally out of character, some times they do both of this things.
