Fictionally speaking I think it really depends upon what your definitions for science and magic are or from within what universe they arise. For example what Victor Frankenstein (in Mary Shelley's classic) uses is a mixture of science and alchemy which frees up the narrative to leave the cause of the monster's resurrection to remain ambiguous.

If you are talking about the real world then by definition alchemy would fall into the category of magic while chemistry occupies the same category within science.
