So what is the single worst comic book you have ever read?

For me it would have to be the godawful Marvel book Dakota North #1. It was just atrocious artwork and one of the dumbest storylines I've ever read in my life. I honestly can't even remember a single thing about it except the terrible artwork and the fact that I was so angry after reading it, that I literally threw it on the grass right in front of my friend's lawnmower.

I don't know about worst of all time but a recent one is Iron Man: Hypervelocity. SUCH CRAP!! The writer has an obsession with mustaches. There's like 3 or 4 references to it. I was gonna add the issue to the data base here but couldn't bring myself to enter it.

I haven't read many comic books(being relatively new), but I think Pirates vs. Ninjas, the X-Men Civil War tie-in, and a few Spider-Man Loves Mary Janes would be near the top. Oh and a lot of those Wolverine: Origins series issues. I know people like it, but I HATE it.

I LOVE Pirates vs. Ninjas! How can you not?!

I have an extremely high tolerance for crappy comics (I actually really liked the Spider-Man clone saga) but what I can't stand are the current slew of "Gore" comics which just seem to see how gross they can be. This includes MOST of the Zombie comics, although I did love Marvel Zombies, and have picked up the Army of Darkness vs. Marvel Zombies #1, because, hey, it's Ash.

I liked tho Spidey clone saga too, I'm not alone!!! The worst comic that comes to mind is the Marville series. That was just plain awful and thought it was cleverer than it actually was. I know it led into a thing for new writers and artists, but it didn't have to suck that much!!

Green Lantern: MOSAIC was a waste of ink, paper, and my hard earned cash.

Let me spoil it for you so you won't make the same mistake I did.

Jon Stewart pouts in the begining, he pouts some more in the middle, the spirit of GL Ch'p encourages him, Jon Stewart becomes a Guardian of the Universe.

Oh wait... no he didn't. A later story changed all that.

Pfft... what a waste. Artist Cully Hamner was so disgusted with DC's editorial leadership at the time, he jumped ship early in the series. It was actually selling quite well, but someone upstairs didn't like the plot, so they gave it the axe at issue #5 and told the writer of this maxipad, I mean maxi series [Gerry Jones] that he had a year to wrap up the story. I tell ya, 18 issues of toilet paper, that was.

Oops! I realize you were asking about the worst SINGLE ISSUE, not story.

Hmmm... then I'd have to say whatever issue of the Marvel Vs DC crossover wherein Wolverine kills Lobo because of a popularity poll dictated the outcome.

I bought 10 copies just so I could wipe my ass with it for months following its release [heh, "release"]!

FRAGGIN' BASTICH couldn't snikt the MAIN MAN!! Pffft.

YA/Runaways Civil War was awful too.

But far and away the worst comic book I have ever read is Uncanny X-Men 424, Holy War part 2 by Chuck Austen.  I'd love to explain why it was so bad but Paul O'Brien of X-Axis does a much better job than I ever could.

"Austen jettisons Casey's origin story for the Church of Humanity's Supreme Pontiff - which was about the only interesting thing in the original story - and replaces him with a disillusioned Catholic nun who's been, you guessed it, the victim of sexual abuse in the Catholic church.  So she sets out to bring down the Church by - brace yourself, this is the good bit - creating an evil plan to instal Nightcrawler as the Pope under an image inducer, and then revealing him as the supposed Antichrist at the same time that she simulates the Rapture.  Then Catholics the world over will turn on the Church and the Church of Humanity will step in to take over!

Now, I know what you're thinking.  You're thinking, "Wow.  That's an incredibly stupid storyline."  And do you know what?  It's even worse on the page.

You may also be wondering how the Church of Humanity plans to simulate the Rapture.  After all, that involves good Catholics being taken up to Heaven.  Well, they're going to disintegrate people using evil doctored communion wafers.

I'll just repeat that.  The villains are going to usurp command of Catholicism by installing Nightcrawler as the Pope and using murderous disintegrating communion wafers.  No, this is not meant to be a comedy story.

This story is so bad that it deserves to be immortalised in derision for years to come.  Even as a hardcore atheist, I have little sympathy for Austen's bizarrely twisted idea of the Catholic Church, which seems to revolve exclusively around the twin concepts of sexual abuse and bigotry.  Granted that those may be the Church's most prominent flaws, in Austen's stories they seem to be the Church's only features.

The idea of a plan to instal Nightcrawler as Pope - never previously mentioned prior to this issue - is comically over the top.  The idea that the world's Catholics are going to react to a simulated Rapture in anything like the manner described is little short of ludicrous and suggests that Austen still thinks ordinary Catholics are little more than dogmatic slaves of their church.  I rather suspect the average Catholic in the street would continue their existing policy of generally acting much like everyone else.

Oh, and let's not forget the disrespect shown to previous writers of the Church of Humanity and Nightcrawler's priest (also a pre-existing character).  The original stories may not have been great, but they were better than this.

Why the hell would anyone want to wrest control of the Catholic Church, anyway?  It's not like it's a significant political power any more.  I suppose it's all very well if you have an evil scheme which entails interfering with the distribution of condoms in Angola, but otherwise they might as well be fighting for control of the West Godalming Yoga Centre.

Competent art from Ron Garney can't raise this issue significantly - for the most part, these days Garney sticks to telling the story as efficiently as possible.  He's not the sort of artist who can make a bad story readable solely through the power of visual aesthetics.

The fact that this storyline was selected for a 25c issue is utterly baffling.  Can we have Joe Casey back, please?

UPDATE:  Thanks to the many readers who have now written to inform me that the Rapture, as depicted in this issue, is actually Protestant theology, and not Catholic at all.  I'm not sure how you do sarcastic slow applause in print, but imagine it here."

Oh and uh....if you're going to go to all the trouble of making Nightcrawler the pope and then reveal him to be devilish by turning off his image inducer....why don't you just use an image inducer to make the current pope look like the devil and save yourself a lot of trouble?

Well, out of every single comic I've ever read, and that's Quuittteee alottt.. I'd have to say the latest issue of Iron Fist, where they do a story on an Iron fist from the future.. was complete dogsh**. Way to disappoint.

Probably Kade.

I managed to get through the first three issues, and then I just had to drop it. It had a nice sort of fantasy/fairytale vibe, but everything just seemed to move so fast, the art wasn't really my thing, and the storyline wasn't explained very well (I thought).

Maybe it got better later, though.

An Avatar comic I read that came with a DVD. (I think it was The Last Airbender's season 1) But it was aimed directly at kids and costed me nothing 'Library's muh friend!' so I'm not angry. I also got to mention Wolverine House Of Blood and Pain or something like that. I believe that was my very first Wolverine comic..or maybe not. Anyway, most of the stories in it were cheesy and tried to hard. One had Wolverine just healing while dreaming he was under Jean's skirt (no lie), another had him fighting in Africa with a baby on his back. Talk about trying too hard to be intesting. And another had elves with machine guns. That was cheesy as f*@K! The only story I enjoyed was the one named after the book, House Of Sorrow and Hurting or something like that...

I actually don't care for the preacher or the local, right now I'm in the middle of their TPBs and their not really blowing me away like I thought they would. As for my recent least favorite book, the only thing I can think of right now is the recent issues of Captain America. They don't even feel like they're trying anymore, sure 600 was okay but I expected something better from Paul Dini. Combined with the beginning of rebirth and I really hope that the series can be good again after Steve comes back.
