Will there/can there ever be a new popular superhero?

Can there be a brand new character that gets their own solo title, movie etc. Like when was the last time DC or Marvel made a really popular character?

I like Jaime Reyes(blue beetle) . He got popular. Even had good air time in young justice and Smallville.

I thought DC could have made John Stewart one of most popular characters ever during the Justice League cartoon series. But I think it's too late now.New character? Maybe, Spawn was really close to becoming one in the 90's so you never know,he's still relatively popular

Maybe like Deadpool? He's from the 90s and is pretty popular.

Kamala Khan, the new Ms. Marvel has the best selling woman of All-New Marvel Now! according to the most up to date sales figures I have access to. It's too soon to know if she'll last, but I think it's a good start.
