Will The Sandman: Overture be accessible to new readers?

Does anyone know whether The Sandman: Overture will be accessible to those who've not yet read Neil Gaiman's previous work on the character? I'm considering picking it up on Comixology tomorrow if the preview art is decent, as I've heard great praise for the previous run and am hoping that this will prove a perfect introduction to such.

In theory, a prequel seems like a reader friendly place to start. I haven't read any Sandman, but I'm buying it for the art, and could maybe get into the old stuff later, if I like this.

If the interiors are anywhere near the quality of the cover I'll gladly pay $5 even if the story proves impenetrable.
