Live Free or Die Hard is arguably as good as the first, and this comes from perhaps the biggest Die Hard fanboy around. Expendables are all solid, over-the-top action. Shoot'em Up is absurdly over the top action and is still great.
I can go on, but my point is this: yes, there are many sh*tty action movies these days. But that's always been the case in action. For every Die Hard and Lethal Weapon you get three Point Breaks (yep, didn't like that one).
And it has nothing to do with toned down violence. Live Free or Die Hard almost had an R rating, till they edited out most of the swearing. Expendables 1 & 2 were both R affairs and the third wasn't, and the level of blood and violence was exactly the same. If Die Hard were remade today without the swearing and nudity, it'd be PG13. You can just get away with more, you need Tarantino level violence to be R based on that or have gratuitous gore like a Saw movie. Which frankly isn't a requirement for a good movie, any movie, let alone good action flick.
Just my two cents, I'm sure plenty will disagree.
