It's been a while and I cant help but notice - Man of Steel is considered by many on Comic Vine, and the internet in generally, as one of the greatest comic book movies of all time, strangely, I used to be one of those people >> http://www.comicvine.com/forums/gen-discussion-1/cv-top-20-cbms-of-all-time-voting-redux-1607734/, and it wasn't a bad film, wasn't amazing either - it's decent, BUT I'm seriously curious why many say it's one of the best CBMs, and I've also seen other users on other forums agree, So... why?

had a all around utterly phenomenal cast

took what had only been done campy before and took it seriously & realistically

hard si-fi

gave us the action scenes we knew the character was capable of

consequences

took a already great movie villain in zod and did a different but just as good take on him

made lois have a genuine connection to superman thru her reporting that was not just her pathetically falling head over heels in love like the donner films did

lois was likable

millitary porn but not too much that it becomes overbearing like the bayformers movies

depth and mythos for its title character

great soundtrack

It was a good movie. This is just my opinion. To me it had one of the best action scenes of any CBM so far, Zodiac are the other kryptonians were beast, it got me into superman comics and it was a great origin story. He spent his whole life trying to fit in and feel like he belonged and he finally found his purpose at the end of the movie. The visuals were great and it did a great job of making the threat seem like a real threat and not something to joke about. I think people are starting to see that the hate it generated was very over exaggerated.

IMO and not to knock the film as I thought it was fairly decent as well, but the whole darker/grounded cover over the movie does boost-- and not blindly either, but does boost some people's opinion on it. I say this because I've read and heard people say that the movie was good because it took things "seriously" and then throw those type of words into other sentences to sell it. And you know this type of thing seems to go for Marvel Studios' films too (people are more hostile tho, with the whole "the comedy is blinding the audience" thing...).

Woah... didn't realise I could slap the title "Man of Steel" on a thread and it'd attract so many people in such short time...

But - it completely lacked depth, and the film is pretty shallow - they have speeches in which characters touch on themes, like Jor-El telling Clark he'll be a symbol of hope... yet it never happens.

I liked when he yells after killing zod because ot shows how he feels about killing. I liked the cast. I liked the visuals. I liked the music. I really liked that movie.

This one explained it well... there aren't really many messages, themes and depth, honestly - there's many characters giving off speeches, and that's it, and many of the stuff they referenced in the dialogue wasn't hugely in the film.

Glad you liked it, though ^__^

Because its awesome. Great story, great villain(s), great action, great score and a great message.

And its the first time we've seen a non-perfect Superman. I don't have an issue with perfect Superman, but we've never seen anything but in any movie. This on the other hand, is a Superman we can literally grow with.

And it had a brave, not cop out ending that didn't adhere to some mythical rule fans seem to believe should exist.

Its not perfect, no film is, but I only had a few issues with it.

and no offense, but if you have to use a 15 minute video to have someone else think for you, then I really don't think you have a strong opinion one way or the other.

I've seen it at least 10 times all ready, 6 of which was in theaters and it holds up after every viewing, something many CBM's do not do. There's not a whole lot of cbm's that can claim that for me.

Also...as everyone else said, its opinions. Who the hell cares if you agree or not, movies are subjective. There is no right or wrong answer.

It lacked depth? It was as deep as the Dark Knight movies. One of my biggest issues with the latter two Batman films is that there is this artificial struggle the filmmakers used to make the characters seem way more important then they are. They literally try to spell it out for the audience. "Hero we deserve, not the one we need right now" commented on and what not. The self righteousness of the sequels drags it down a bit for me. Also Batman is quite a hypocrite in that he doesn't want others to dress up and fight crime (as shown by his opener in DK "I'm not the one wearing hockey pads!", but his whole idea is to be an inspiration that anybody could do what he does. WTF!

Superman on the other hand? Did his business regardless if the viewer agreed with the ends justifying the means. (and they did. Because Zod wins or it becomes a cartoon with convenient jails to magically contain Zod otherwise). As for themes, MoS is the first part of a series. If the concept of tossing heroes into the fray in hopes of prepping a JL movie doesn't derail it, odds are BvS, or MoS 2 will pick up those themes and address them again.

MoS was just as deep as any other CBM that takes itself serious. Watchmen, Winter Soldier, DK trilogy, etc.

My point summed up in a sentence? Don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house.

I think it's cause it's basically the kind of cartoon people have been asking for, but live action, it kind of reminds me of young justice or teen titans, mostly taken seriously with minimal jokes, there were real risks and problems that aren't just handled without trouble

while the majority of marvel movies throw in comedy at every possible moment, cap 2 cut back on it, and people call it one of the best

the comedy is nice, but not everyone is always in the mood for a comedy, and MoS is a nice change

Wut. Both Young Justice and Teen Titans had plenty of comedy moments (moreso TT). They struck a balance between dramatic and comedy which MOS lacks.

Why is MOS Considered By Many As One of The Greatest CBMs?

It isn't, sure there's a percentage of the movie-going base that view MOS as one of the greatest but it's very small.

By the way, the majority of the comments here seem to praise MOS based on what it DOESN'T have rather than what it has.

@theamazingspidey Sam's Channel is one of my favorite movie review channels out there, very rarely have I ever watched a movie then watched his review of the same movie and disagree with his thoughts.

@night4345: that's subjective, MoS made me laugh plenty of times, but they're more subtle jokes, like Lois saying "be careful those are heavy" and Clark's already carrying them like "oh right", or when people insult him(dick-splash made me and my roommate laugh pretty hard)

if it didn't make you laugh, that's fine, but there's plenty of parts that can make you laugh if you like that comedy

Because people like disaster movies.

Saying the fighting was unenterprising or hard to follow has me scratching my head tho. It was entertaining but it wasn't Superman. Most of Superman's fight really are just him punching him a lot... at least thats how all his big fights turn out with Doomsday, Lobo, and Darkseid.

That's not fair, it's not like Superman is unaware that he could just tear those apart. The handcuffs were there just to show he was surrendering himself to the US Army.
If you wanna laugh at something that was unintentionally bad, I'd say we should mock the obviously penis-shaped space pods.

His whole idea is to inspire people to reject the idea that crime will always rule Gotham, not to go out and get themselves killed. The same movie has one of the guys with the hockey pads telling Joker that Batman is "a symbol that we don't have to be afraid of guys like you" --- not a symbol to do stupid things.

  • Great cast/good acting
  • Henry Cavill looked perfect as Superman
  • Best action I've seen in a cbm
  • Zod was an interesting villain, he thought his actions were justified
  • Speeches about hope were great, which imo is foreshadowing for the next movie
  • Superman was inexperienced, he made mistakes, which had consequences
  • Krypton looked amazing
  • Jor-El was awesome
  • Dark, gritty, and realistic - my type of movies!!! MOS wasn't that dark tho.
  • A few emotion scenes
  • Amazing visuals
  • Plot and pacing were good

What happened in MOS is like dropping a pebble in a lake, the ripples will will effect future films. We already have leaked photo of a Superman statue, angry anti-Superman protesters. There's no telling how Superman will handle the next villain if he's put into another impossible situation, my moneys on he won't off the guy, but the suspense of how he'll handle it will be exciting to see.

I know it wasn't unintentional, I said I considered it intentional. The military didn't know the full extent of Superman's powers by that point in the movie, and probably thought the handcuffs would be able to contain him. I think it was just a wink to the audience, played for giggles.

@saren: Fair enough and in that light it sounds a lot better.

It's still a jerkoff move though to have him expect that only he is allowed get proactive outside of the law and to go beat up thugs. I'll grant that the hockey crew using guns may have set him off so maybe he'd be easier on vigilante's who used other means. It's all speculation, though.

Because despite it being a very bad film, people wanted it to be a success so badly that they've essentially blinded themselves.
