@battle_forum_junkie: I was VERY angry until I saw that picture. Thank you sir.
why do the 90s get so much crap?
Most people that insult the comics of the 90s didn't even read comics in the 90s. It's kind of funny, actually, considering they really don't know what they're talking about. There was a lot of great stuff in the 90s. A lot.
This. The 90'rs had the rise of independents, the birth of Vertigo, Milestone and other smaller publishers/imprints, the second British invasion and the same amount of good superhero titles like any other decade.

Yeah, there was great stuff...but then there was Liefeld, like almost everywhere.

Most people are stupid, that's why. The 1990's were a great time for comics.
After 1999 most everything went downhill.
The 90's didn't have DC 52 or Marvel Now.

The over the topness of it all. Disproportionately huge muscles. Unnecessarily huge guns all over the place. Annoyingly "XTREEEEME" names like Bloodscream or Deathrage. Spelling things the wrong way because it looks "cool." Bad anti heroes all over the place. Basically it was the anti silver age. Except much of it was eye rollingly bad and over the top.
QFT.
well.....the nineties almost destroyed irreparably the comic book industry....
first of all there was the speculator boom, where people who had no prior interest in comics, wanted to cash in on future investments expecting mass produced comics to sell for big fortunes later in their life. this caused several things, a constant ratchet up of prices that haven' really come back down properly, made comic companies go more for gimicks rather than content, inves heavily on plans that don't end up panning out. (and bankrupts Marvel), then there was the focus on cardboard characters of constant action and no development of character, as well as nonseniscal outfits and designs... (pouches, bags, overly muscled, and should pads with ridiculesly big guns for all males, the skimpiest generic nondescript outfits for all girls)
sure there are good points to the ninties, but they are hard to find...

This shows both sides pretty well. I would add to it that while Image did change the way the industry did business, so many other things died. Vertigo survived until 2010, but Milestone and the Ultraverse died relatively quick deaths. They had great, superior content IMO, but not enough backing. The deaths of these imprints after two or three years is not a plus for the Nineties- it should be an embarrassment.

Vertigo is still going?

Nah.

@billy_batson: Sorry, typing fast before getting ready for work- thanks for the correction. I was thinking of the DC characters that had gone Vertigo being shifted back to DC. Vertigo still has some wonderful titles coming out.
@jwalser3: Not even close. Did I sound like him?
Yes.
More like... YES. :P

Liefield. His name explains it all
All that artwork just came flooding back to me. The color black and metal chains. Pockets and giant guns. God, Liefield, why?!
Because 90`s was kind of a tacky decade. Sure, there was Simpsons, Sandman, a cloned sheep and other advancements in science...but there was also stuff like this.
That can be said from the 80`s too. And 21. century so far. But 90`s has been stuck with the lousy rep it`s got, for a long while now.
More like... YES. :P

Let's not be stealing my images. :p
Because everyone was an a*shole. A lot like Nu52 heroes.
Difference is, while I could at least gush over the extremity and laugh about the OTTness of the 90s the modern stuff just makes me sick to my stomach.
@peppeyhare: D: good lord. I was talking about this kind of stuff.
Maybe next time he'll explain why his characters suffer from a rare form of super-scoliosis.
Reading this old post is quite amusing to see just how ignorant some were in 2013-14. this is what happens when you get your info from shill media.
The 90s was the last great era for comics(so far) and it gave us...
The Infinity Gauntlet
TAS version of Batman
Harley Quinn
Bane
Classic X-Men Blue and Gold era
The Thunderbolts
Cable, Deadpool and Domino
Wolverine's origin
Two-Face's origin
Death of Superman
the Return of the classic Green Hulk
Highest selling comic book in the history of the industry
the Simpson's first decade in comics
Lots of brand new popular characters from the indies
The Sin City characters
The Mask
Spawn
Prime and Ultraforce
Fone Bone and the gang
Frank "Madman" Einstein
I could really go on and on. to consider the 90s anything other than a success is just silly, the era produced so much.
The 90s gave us goddamn Spawn, that alone makes already up for all the edgyness and ridiculous character designs.
