why do people always resort to popularity

why do people always resort to popularity to determine who is stronger?

for example: "iron man vs THOR" people will say "iron man is stronger" because of his popularity.

happens mostly on youtube and i find it annoying.

Because where personal experience fails, most non-comic book readers rely on preference.

They prefer Iron Man. Therefore, he's better than Thor. Therefore, he beats Thor. Etc.

Pretty much why people think Batman can beat everyone even without prep.

Only fanboys or the casual superhero fan would base a battle's outcome on character preference. Don't get worked up over it - this sort of thing happens in every fandom.

Its the same reason Superman fans think Superman has Infinite Strength, Speed, Durability and what not. Its the hype of the character. In modern age Tech is always better then Magic. So because Ironman has advanced tech he should be able to overpower the old obsolete magic of Thor. Also they may have seen a panel where Ironman in his Thorbuster Armor was fighting toe to toe with Thor and just thought it was a snazzy new armor not realizing it was designed to fight Thor but still had trouble doing just that.

They resort to popularity because they can't put up that good of an argument. But like @veshark: said, try not to get worked up about it, it's gonna happen. :)
