Just curious since Pym is more well-known and associated with Antman and in my opinion, a more complex character with more history to use. The several comments in the Ant-Man excitement thread about preferring Hank Pym made me wonder.
Why did they choose Scott Lang over Hank Pym for the film?

Pym is a way different character to Lang...
Why don't you ask Wasp?
Yeah, aging Pym means the current status of the Wasp is now messed up.
@maccyd: But 95% of the movie populace doesn't care.

95% of the movie populace doesn't know who Captain Marvel or Black Panther are either, so what's your point?
@maccyd: Exactly.
So why would it matter who the person in the costume is?
To them, it doesn't.

@spidey_jackson: So why doesn't Marvel just keep making Iron Man and Captain America films then, still the general audience doesn't care?
@maccyd: What does that have to do with anything?
Beata
Too be honest, around 90% watching the film will have no clue on what and Who Ant-Man is...
It doesn't matter why they chose it...
Scott probably fits more into the universe they were trying to build and the stories they want to tell.
I think its because they didn't want Pym intruding on Tony Stark and Bruce Banner's territory as the resident genius' in the Avengers in case Ant man joins the team in the future. Paul Rudd being more of a comic relief as opposed to a serious genius which makes sense if they want him to become an Avenger.
Because Edgar Wright wanted so.

You can apply the "general audience doesn't care so why don't they" rule to pretty much anything tbh.

In the comics, Pym tends to use comic relief more than Lang ironically enough.
Cause they have enough smart guys, they wanted an average dude with a family, more relatable.
Suppose, they couldn't have someone smarter than Stark on the team, although the topic of mental health would have been an interesting and relatable topic.
@maccyd: If he`s not a wife-beater why did Marvel make him crazy for wife-beating in the Ultimate universe
Marvel is pretty squeemish when it comes to doing anything even mildly offensive in their movies, so they went with a character with a much cleaner history.
That's the Ultimate universe, Hulk is a cannibal and Captain America is a bigot in that universe.
They would have ignored that part of history, the same as Iron man's alcoholism and depression.
@maccyd: Ultimate universe used the basics of the characters and amped them up. If Hank didn`t have history of domestic abuse, then it wouldn`t be a thing in Ultimates.
Even if they didn`t have Hank hitting his wife in the movie, people could very easily find his comic history with a simple google search. Marvel would probably rather not deal with any type of backlash people would have with a main character associated with domestic abuse. Even if it was exaggerated, clickbait articles would pop up all over the place like `Marvel makes movies about Wife-Beating superhero`.
@maccyd: @midnightdragon18: It doesn't make a difference who the Antman is.

Yes it does. Pym was a genius, whose mind rivals that of Stark and Banner. I'd pay top dollar to see Hank Pym on screen working on his antman costume and discovering Pym particles.
@rdclip: Pym's wife beating status is mainly known due to the Ultimate universe in the first place. 616, he only hit her accidentally once and that was due to an artist's mistake.
Almost every superhero over a certain age has a shady past that has potential for clickbait articles. Reed Richard was more abusive and sexist towards his wife than Hank ever was and threatened to kill his own child, yet he's headlining yet another film.
I think the reason they went with Lang as the main hero is because the surprise villain is Pym. That would be wrong on so many levels, but signs suggest that.
I don't think the domestic abuse issue is really an issue. Marvel would just ignore it as it has Iron-Man's alcoholism or Hawkeye taking the side of his wife's rapist.
I read on IMDB that it was because they thought Hank Pym's story was too dark for a Marvel movie what with the multiple personalities and the wife beating stuff. They thought that Scott Lang's story was compelling enough and more fitting what with the 'thief who steals for his daughter' aspect.
@maccyd: only during the period where Cassie was dead. Historically Scott is the jokes tier.
They probably wanted the main protagonist to be more relatable to the general audience.

This seems the most likely explanation to me.
Because most people watching don't care, and those that do care are talking about it.
Still, where did the idea come from, it's akin to Warner Bros saying "you know what, for our first WW film, let's use Donna Troy instead".
Because they are cowards
