Growing up I was not a Captain America fan. As a child, I always assumed he was some spandex wearing propaganda, and truth be told that's what he was created for. It wasn't till I started to read his stories thanks to Civil War that I realized Captain America wasn't a representative of our government, but rather our people. He quickly became one of my top favorites. People used to always ask me why I liked him so much because they made the same assumptions I used to.
Come Captain America: The Winter Soldier, now everyone understands why I like the character so much. The movie wasn't just a box office success, it opened everyone's eyes to what Captain America really stood for. Here's the biggest proof I can give, Captain America winning over communist China.

"[The new villain] is the very country he loves and protects," writes one Douban reviewer. "To love one's country isn't the same as loving one's government: This is the main draw of Captain America."
There's also another link that I can't find anymore since it was in one of the Chinese dialects, but a woman came out of the theater and told the news "[Where's our Captain America? Where's Captain China to represent us, the Chinese people?]" from my memory.
I'm happy that my large group of friends now understand why Captain America appeals to me thanks to The Winter Soldier movie.
Now if only they can only understand why Bucky is my number one favorite character...
