Do you know how the Surfer got his name? The Silver is obvious, but Surfer? Why a surfboard? Of all things, why does he fly on a surfboard? You'd think perhaps a grand spaceship, or nothing at all. You see, the Surfer needed something to convey him from place to place. But he didn't want the confines of a ship, nor the complete disconnect of unassisted flight. And so, he stands on a surfboard.
Why is this relevant?
Imagine standing on the edge of a cliff, looking out at the horizon. Top of the world. Master of all you survey. This is how the Surfer feels all the time, but whereas we look at the horizon and know it is beyond our reach, he see's the universe, and knows that nothing is beyond his grasp.
True, ultimate freedom. And beyond Galactus, no one to answer to. No obligations or responsibilities beyond his own moral code, and the knowledge that he has sufficient power to enforce that code if necessary.
Do I even have to say I prefer Silver Surfer over Orion?
