There has been a lot of discussion and chatter about who best to play Dr. Strange in the upcoming film. Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joseph Gordon Levitt. These actors are very talented but I don't think they fit build for Dr. Strange. If anyone has seen the animated film of Dr. Strange (great adaptation) which should be the basis for the film and expanded further, then u would know that Dr. Strange is a smug, apathetic surgeon who loses his hands (neurologically not physically) and he gains enlightenment thanks to the Ancient One. I think Johnny Depp or Edward Norton would be best candidates for Dr. Strange especially Norton after his work in the Illusionist. He looked a lot like Dr. Strange
Who can play Dr. Strange?
oh god, if anything is sacred, please don't let them choose depp for doc strange. horrible actor. someone unknown or a lot less known. big names suck.
@i_dont_like_comics: Johnny Depp isn't that bad. His career 20 years ago like Gilbert Grape and Edward Swissorhands was mediocre at best but his role as Jack Sparrow revitalized his stardom. U have to give him credit not too many can pull of that role. Its like Heath Ledger as the Joker, people say Ledger's Joker can never be mimicked or surpassed but I disagree.
As for picking nobody actors to play big leads, it doesn't always work out like Brandon Routh playing Superman. Its a gamble that doesn't always pay off.
@ravenvice01: that's dc. marvel has been awesome picking unknowns. and depp can play only 1 character: jack sparrow/tonto/scissor hands/any other weird role he has ever done.
@i_dont_like_comics: dr strange does contend with the weird and supernatural.
anyone with good talent.
my only real red flag is Johnny Depp. Not only was that rumor debunked, but he'd be a horrible choice. I'm so sick and tired of Depp playing the same freaking character over and over and over. Not to say he can't be good as Strange, I've just seen it all ready, a dozen times. I wouldn't even go watch the movie if they did that.
Depp is either hit or miss. Some great performances in Benny and Joon, Chocolat, Finding Neverland, and PotC. He just needs to select better roles instead of playing the same character over and over again.
As for others I could see playing the role that haven't been mentioned, Oded Fehr for an older Dr. Strange and Jonathon Rhys Meyers for a younger one.
@bigl: Mads and Aiden would be great as villains like Benedict Cumbercatch. As for Ethan Hawke, he would be better off playing a different superhero.
@quickfingers26: Nah, Jon hamm as a supporting character maybe but not as Dr strange
Well my second pick would be Anson Mount from "Hell on Wheels". I think he could bring the intensity, self loathing and redemption to Dr Strange's tale.
Honestly, a lot of good choices here. Depp would have been awesome for the part way back when he did "The Ninth Gate" but that was 15 years ago. =(
@quickfingers26: U don't mean that same guy who wuz in Hood of Horrors do u? The Slum Lord. I haven't seen Hell on Wheels. Is it any good?
@ravenvice01: Never saw Hood of Horrors. I can't recall seeing Anson Mount in anything else off the top of my head. I enjoyed Hell on Wheels personally but it does it have its flaws. I'd give it 7/10.
Kind of a lesser known actor but I think Mark Pellegrine would be a pretty good choice. Dr. Strange is pretty hard to cast though.
Hmmmmm.
Hugh Laurie.
I'm for this!
Hmmmmm.
Hugh Laurie.
I'm for this!
he would be great in it too.
Hmmmmm.
Hugh Laurie.
I'm for this!
right? think that would work well.......
@cosmicallyaware1: Nobody plays charming prick better than Laurie except maybe RDJ. And Dr. Strange is the ultimate charming prick, except for Tony Stark
@night_thrasher: @night_thrasher: Hugh Laurie would be better off playing Kent Nelson aka Dr. Fate. Some people agree that Edward Norton would be a choice pick. Dr. Strange isn't exactly charming like Tony Stark. He's more like the Bruce Wayne of the supernatural in Marvel with the only exception that he isn't rich. Dr. Strange and Bruce Wayne are morbid at times, intelligent and well aware of their surroundings when combating their adversaries. I still think Mads from the Hannibal TV series and Casino Royale would be better off as a villain. Maybe he should be play Baron Mordo, one of Strange's mortal foes.
Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Doctor Stephen Strange.....
He definitely has the look...but I don't know if he could pull it off. I'm not doubting him, I just haven't seen anything that would convince me otherwise.
@night_thrasher: Actually u have a point with Jack Huston. He wuz kind of monotone in Boardwalk Empire but he wuz dramatic when he needed to be. I think if he played Dr. Strange, the role would put him to the test and bring about another side to him that will be appealing not only to him but to the target audience. Good choice my friend. Top 3 would be Jack Huston, Edward Norton and Johnny Depp
@night_thrasher: still rooting for Hugh laurie. If he had played House 15 or 20 years ago in order to get his name out there then I would say he could play dr. Strange but now jack Huston is ur best bet. Hugh laurie would be better off playing Kent Nelson aka Dr fate
I'm glad that some of my fellow users think Johnny Depp would be great as Dr. Strange. I'm curious who they would cast as Dormammu/ The Hood, Wong, Baron Mordo, Umar, Clea and the Ancient One. I think Mads Mikkelsen would be great as Baron Mordo. Wong should be played by Jackie Chan and maybe Randall Duk Kim (Keymaker from Matrix Reloaded) or Ken Watanabe could play the Ancient One
It's gotta be someone has has a strong enough presence to act with nothing around him. This movie is probably going to be the most CGI-heavy one to date. That's why I'm not sure if a small time actor would be able to handle this role.
@fresh_prince: u hav a point. My money is on jack huston, depp or Edward norton
Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) as Doctor Stephen Strange.....
I think I might of called it!!!!http://comicsalliance.com/link-ink-deadpool-crashes-marvel-variants-hit-girl-calls-it-quits-and-a-guardianspeanuts-mash-up/
