I'm looking for some new reading material, and I'd like to know who my fellow Viners think the best comic book writers that are still working today are.

Starting off the list, I'll say Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, Batman RIP), Mark Millar (Civil War, The Ultimates), and my absolute favorite of all time, Mark Waid (Superman: Birthright, Kingdom Come).

Give it a shot!

I think that such thing is way too personal, I really enjoy Hickman and Warren Ellis, currently I also enjoy Jeff Lemire, Scott Snyder, Kieron Gillen, and Brian Azzarello

Morrison and Snyder are my 2 favorites atm, although Morrison is about to be done

Aside from those already mentioned, there's also Brubaker, Remender, Vaughan..

There's actually quite a lot of good stuff lately, you just need to know where to look.

Dan Slott

@danhimself: I wouldn't say Slott is great, but I like him 'cause his work is consistently good.

Brian K. Vaughan and Greg Rucka. I would also keep an eye on David Liss, he is pretty new to comics but everything he has do has been really great.

Jeph Loeb -_-

I haven't read enough of a particular writer to have a firm opinion on anyone but I loved Bryan Q. Miller's work on Stephanie Brown's Batgirl and after just checking him out he hasn't done anything else really.

I haven't read anything written by Brubaker that wasn't really good. Winter Soldier is one of the least talked about great books out there right now.

Jeff Lemire, Scott Snyder, Ed Brubaker, Robert Kirkman, Matt Fraction are probably my current faves. Mark Waid is really close too, as well as others.

Actually, that about sums it up for me accept I'd probably put Millar in third, Grant in second and Waid ahead of Morrison but not by much.

Also, Neil Gaiman. That guy is great, even though I haven't read anything by him to recently, when he puts out, he puts out well.

His indy stuff is way out there. I'm actually about to begin The Nightly News, the non-traditional page formatting is a bit daunting. I just finished The Red Wing, and it was great. I couldn't get into Transhuman though, it was like a documentary in comic book form.

Agreed. Nightly News was a pretty high concept. At times I had to think what was going on...in a good way of course. Rereading would also help.

Geoff Johns is great...

I'd say Snyder, Waid and Azzarello. For under-rated I'd say Simone. Batgirl is very well-written and deserves more readers.

Scott Snyder and Grant Morrison are in a class of their own. Geoff Johns is great but he has some large flaws occasionally
