The Red.

#6 Edited by ratman19 (525 posts) - 9 months, 12 days ago - Show Bio

for those that dont read swamp thing or animal man.

The Red is a force which connects and pervades all animal life in the universe. It is intended to be the force from which a number of animal-powered heroes get their abilities.

The Green is an elemental force which connects all forms of plant life on earth, experienced by elementals as an ethereal realm inhabited by the collective minds of the Parliament of Trees.

The Black or The Rot is a force which is strongly associated with death. The decay and rotting of living things is where it flourishes.

in other words The Red gives you animal powers. The Green gives you plant powers. The Black gives you control over death and makes you able to have zombie minions.

Is the Rot officially "the black?" In the Earth-2 books they call it "the gray". And what are some heroic characters who can be connected to the Rot? I'd like to think Agent Frankenstein, but he was pretty much confirmed to NOT be of the Rot and in fact was an anathema to the Rot, his very presence offensive and painful to them. I wonder if Cyborg would count as an agent of the Rot since it's been implied that he's half dead in the latest JLA issue. I mean, is Abby Holland the only example? I think with all we know about beneficial microfauna and our symbiotic relationships to them, there's a lot of potential for a heroic character fueled by the Rot.

Here are some heroic and villainous characters connected to the Red, the Green, and the Rot for context of those not reading those books:

The Red:

The Green:

The Rot:

Edit:

Oh, and I would assume Vixen as powered by the Red, but we haven't really seen her in the new 52 yet.

This is a bit off topic, but after rot world does anyone else think it will be red vs green? Also I'd go with green since plant life just seems more powerful than the other two and less easily manipulated by the rot.

@Scheiner: they might put them against eachother. that would be pretty cool.but then they'd have to do another crossover. so they might not do it for awhile.

That would be cool because they alluded to the fact that in the past each of the three have had times where they have gotten too powerful and the other two had to pair up to take them down and restore balance.

For the question. I would definitely go for the green. Basically be immortal. Can teleport anywhere there is green. Be able to manipulate all plant life. And, as Swamp Thing has shown in recent issues, you could also fly. That and I wouldn't feel bad about hunting and eating meat.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that they age normally until they decide to enter the red and become a Totem. That at least is what I gathered from the current Animal Man series and once they leave the Red, like Socks, they cannot return so their immortality is gone. It seems to be the same with the green though as in the first 2 issues of the Swamp Thing in the New 52, the old Swamp Thing visits Alec. Since he is separated from the Parliament, he dies shortly after telling his story. I don't think that Swamp Thing ages though since he can just create a new body and transfer himself wherever he chooses.

So I think they both can be immortal upon entering their respective parliaments but ST will live longer than the avatar of the red. It also makes sense as the oldest trees have lasted above 4,000 years while the oldest animals are around 150-200 years old if you don't count bacteria and sponges and the like.

@Cap10nate: thanks, i only read issue 12 of animal man because of the rotworld crossover. so my knowledge of the red is limited to what they said about it in swamp thing.

#19 Posted by Cap10nate (961 posts) - 9 months, 12 days ago - Show Bio

@ratman19: My knowledge of it is a little limited as well because I only read the New52 Animal Man series because i wanted the whole story for Swamp Thing. The interesting thing though is that Animal Man is not the Avatar but his daughter Maxine is. Buddy should never be as powerful as Swamp Thing but who knows what his daughter will be capable of doing. She is already starting to have some impressive feats by commanding all the animals to attack the rot creature earlier in the series and basically destroying any of the creatures that came through the portal at the age of 4.

Do we know what the Red Avatar can do at full power? I never read Animal Man before the New 52 so I don't know if it was touched there.
