I've got about twenty bucks on my card to spare on comics. I plan to spend it wisely. I was thinking about picking up the brand new first issue of Amazing Spiderman, but I'm also interested in that new Hulk series that's out.

How about the DC comics too? I hear the new watchmen novel that's coming out might be good.

Do you viners have any recommendations?

Go to Instocktrades and spend it on a few Image trades. Make that $20 stretch. Pick up the first volumes of Saga and Revival.

@brolytard1337: Comics, good ones. Image is putting out brilliant stuff and the first volume of most any series is priced at $9.99. Shop around and you can find em priced at $5 or $6. Or if you're a digital reader look at what Monkeybrain comics has to offer. Lots of variety, $.99 an issue.

Amazing Spider-Man #1 is just ok. Daredevil #2 is good though. Also hearing a lot of good things about Detective Comics #30.

It varies to whenever I feel like spending money on comics. But I do get a monthly allotment of money, if that's what you're wondering.

@brolytard1337: I ask because if you're planning to buy a once in a lifetime selection of comics, then I might advice Kingdom Come, Justice, Batman Year One etc. However if this 20 are for your monthly pull I would buy Batman, Uncanny Avengers, Detective Comics, Daredevil and Quantum and Woody.

@brolytard1337: Not to butt in, but Uncanny Avengers has been really good. Word to the wise, skip the first arc and start with issue #5 or #6.

If I skip the first arc will the story be hard to keep up with?

@brolytard1337: Not at all. #5 is a one shot that should get you up to speed on the dynamic of the team.

I trust his word, but the thing is, most of those comics are new to me. Meaning I've never heard of any of those characters Image comics has, and am skeptical on reading about a character I'm not familiar with. Do you have any experiences with Image comics? Are their comics as good as he says?

Image has some pretty good comics. I'm sure you've heard of Walking Dead and that's published by Image. Then there's stuff like Chew, Saga, Invincible, Fatale, etc. Image is really a very solid brand right now.

@brolytard1337: Totally understand. I was skeptical at first, too.

I'm still new-ish to Image myself, but I have yet to read-at least IMO-a bad comic from them. Everything's been pretty solid. Personally, I'm loving Kirkman's "Invincible" series. I've also got my eye on a few trades that I want to try out this month, and hopefully add to my pull-list soon after.

Since you're interested in Spider-Man and Hulk the first two picks are easy.

  1. Amazing Spider-Man #1
  2. Hulk #1
  3. Iron Fist Living Weapon #1
  4. New Warriors #1
  5. Archer & Armstrong

@brolytard1337:

If you want to start read amazing stories that turn into world-building sagas:

  • Batman: City of Owls
  • Green Lantern: Rebirth

And there are subsequent arcs, just ask me if you want to anything else about them.

You should stick to reading them digitally, though.

I'd listen to him.

Image has one of the most solid line-ups right now, and I don't see why being unfamiliar with their characters would be a problem considering most of them are original creations that exist only in their stories, you might as well be skeptical of most movies since they too feature completely original characters that don't appear anywhere else.

I'll just give you my pull list: Archer and Armstrong, Unity, Witchblade, Artifacts

I know, some awkward titles, but that's what I like to read. Other series I like but don't buy are Superior Spider-Man, Bloodshot, Daredevil, and Deadpool.

@smashbrawler: Well, at least for me, it was the money. At the time I didn't have much free money for comics, but at least-for example-I knew I liked Green Arrow as a character before I picked up the series. I ended up really liking it anyway, but with these Indie titles I didn't know I would like the character in the first place, let alone the writing. I definitly see your point, though.

@battle_forum_junkie: Nah, I was referring to his skepticism. I understand not having enough money, but being unfamiliar with characters is a reason for not reading new books I'll never get. People don't watch The Godfather because they read a Vito Corleone comic or something like that, they watch it because it's a great movie.
