What do you look for most when reading a comic?

Do you look really nice art, like myself? I mean art comes number one for me I can stick with a line of comics that's story isn't so good but has great artwork. But that is just me.

Or is a solid plot your main focus?

Of course. Wimberly is one of my favorites - Prince of Cats is damn great and Pulido is a good storyteller.

For me it goes Characterization >> Plot > Art

Art may as well be just as important as plot, it's just that I can read a comic with a good story but sh*tty art, but I can't read one with a sh*tty story regardless of the artwork.

Art, (but just barely). At the end of the day comics are a visual medium. Without the art you are just reading a novel. I have read plenty of less than ideal comic stories that I still loved because the art was so great. But it's rare that I can tolerate even a world class top selling writer's story if the art is atrocious.

how about you take that art and than you jumble the pages up......its the storytelling..the artwork is used to tell the story..but without the story it could just be an art catalog

although art is still very important..i feel that story telling takes the cake

I like when there's a good story...but if the story has some lame art then i just can't read it. It disturbs me.

Also, im more of an artist than writer...

I would say, both of it. But story is much more important, even when the looks of the characters just got molded into a series of halloween masks.

Being an amateur artist I used to focus on art primarily ,but as I got older I paid a lot more attention to the writing and story also. I still go art first but I value the story WAY more than I used to. It's like meeting a pretty girl that can't hold a decent conversation.

I'll be honest, I give the slight edge to art. If I don't like the art, I can't enjoy the story.

Comics is visual medium. So art is important. I'm not saying story is not important but without art, it will not be call a comic book or graphic novel. It just will be a novel or a book.

you are right without the art it would not be a graphic novel, but without the story it would not be a graphic novel, it would be an art catalog

comic art needs a story, the art shows you the story, but without the story the art wont make coherent sense, it would not be a graphic novel

For me there has to be a good balance between the two. With some titles the story may not be the best but the artwork makes up for it. Or the art may be okay and the story is so great that it doesn't even bother me. Which is why I'm rarely disappointed by the comics that I pick up. Now if both the art and the story is bad, then we have a problem.

I have dropped/avoided many books with good art because I didn't care about the story or characters.

In a comic book, both are equally important to me. That is to say, I don't want good artwork without a good story, or vice versa. I come to comic books looking for both, and both should be well done. Someone will argue, "but whether artwork is good or not is entirely subjective and based on personal preference." To that, I say poppycock. Anyone who is an artist (sketching, painting, sculpting, or whatever) knows that there are basic to advanced principles of art and design that, if not followed, can make for a bad sketch, painting, sculpture, or whatever.

Without and story you dont have a comic book, you just have a bunch of random images.

@deathpoolthet1000: Likewise, without drawings/images you don't have a comic book, you just have a book.

And by the way, well ordered images can still tell a powerful story.

Uh, story. Kind of a no-brainer seeing how comics are meant to be read... and sure, some may argue that without art comics would just be books but at least I'd be left with a worthwhile book whereas pretty art without story is just an art catalog, which can be interesting but not nearly as good as reading a good story.

Probably 80% story, 20% art for me. I will usually pick up a book that the story concept interests me regardless of the art, but I have never picked up a book simply because I liked the art in it.

She-Hulk is the first book in a long time that I was thinking about giving a try, but I couldn't get over the preview pages and scans that I have seen of the art. Not my style at all.

I want the story most...however bad or mismatched art can be a HUGE distraction to the story.
